Tips for Shooting with Red Dot?

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forums, so I hope you don't mind if I ask a newb question in regards to shooting with my red dot optic.

Every time I draw and extend my arms, it takes a second or two to line up my red dot to the target.

Does anyone have any tips to get a consistent draw and to have my red dot line up on my target the moment my arms extend?

Gotta lock out that weak hand wrist. It gives you the most friction and leverage on the firearm. Dot is not a pass to hold the pistol loosely. Practice your draw until the dot shows up every time.

Practice, practice, practice! I find the dot is pretty close to where my trigger finger is pointing (while off the trigger).

I usually focus on the target, not dot. as long as the dot is on the target, pull the trigger.

Take it off chuck it in the ocean and use iron sights. No seriously though, it's gonna take a lot of practice don't get frustrated

Draw the gun up close to your chest, get your weakhand on the gun and push it straight out at the target. Starting the gun closer to your eyes and pushing it straight out at eye level makes it easier to pickup the dot sooner. After awhile you will get a feel for the grip angle and position to pick up the dot very quickly.

maybe you need to get natural shooting position?
close your eyes, position the gun, open the eyes
and if iron sight or dot sight is not aligned, your body or shoulder-arms or grips are not aligned, there are storange angle anywhere

My problem was always looking for the front sight . Once I got past that it was very easy to use my RMR

The RDS typically used on pistols are not as forgiving as some of the RDS people are used to on their rifles and too many people have been relying on these as a method of getting faster target acquisition than their iron sights. There are no shortcuts to faster target acquisition. You need to practice for consistency and getting your sights (irons) properly lined up for a good sight picture. Absent this skill, you will struggle with quicker performance with the dot sights.

I have a dot sight on one of my Glocks and the dot is set to be on the tip of my front sight when I have my sights properly aligned. The red dot is there every time if I have a good consistent grip and hold.

Yup, It's the nature of RDS.

Tips:

get one with a big dot. They are easier to locate, and just as accurate on round bullseye targets.

Get one with a ring around the dot. Makes it easier to get to the dot without fishing for it.

Get one on a tube (like ultradot) rather than a heads-up dot. That makes it faster to acquire the dot.

Muscle memory. Practice practice practice.

Last tip, sell the dot and go to night sights. But that's not really a red dot tip

I have to agree with just about everything said above. I have a Leupold Delta Point Pro Red Dot on my S&W 41. I have been shooting it for a bit over a year. When I first started using it, it took a bit to acquire the dot. Now it is second nature, and comes up naturally when I point the gun. Practice and muscle memory.

You shouldn't put a red dot on a pistol until you're a very experienced pistol shooter using the sights. Unless you can draw every single time and the sights are lined up perfectly in your presentation, you aren't ready for a red dot. Your muscle memory needs to be perfect and repeatable.

Only then will you draw and not have to hunt for the dot. It'll be right there lined up with your sights.

Learn to perfect your presentation with iron sights first.

When I draw, I think of a submarine surfacing instead of a fishing cork bobbing as it surfaces. It eliminates the bounce.
Focus on the target. Muzzle up and the front site comes into your sight as your arms are extended to the shooting position.
