    Speed Loader

What type of speed loader do you recommend for a 586 S&W 4 inch barrel?
I have moon clips for my wife's Taurus 905.
Are Moon Clips even available for my S&W.
What do you think of Moon Clips vs. Speed loaders?

I like moon clips, never had a problem with them and they are faster for reloads then speed loaders. Moon clips are like magazines for revolvers.

Moon clips are nicer. Not only the fastest in loading your revolver with, they also keep all your brass together. Your revolver must be machined for moonclips for you to utilize moonclips.

Check out the Safariland Comp 2 speed loaders. They're much easier to use than the older twist type speed loaders, these you just align, and slap into the cylinder and the rounds drop in, the loader falls away, and you're done. Easy peasy. Absolute great for CCW/reloads. The Comp 3 are the full sized ones for competition.

              I have both.....;-)

On the original cylinder for my S&W Mod. 66 I load manual or use Speedloaders. Problem with speedloaders is, when used on a K FRame or smaller, you have to cant the speedloader a bit, due to the narrow cylender.

On L frame or larger, that is no problem. There are several modells out ther. Just go to a dealer and test different one and take the one, that works best for our demands.

On a second cylendar I have moonclips. was harder getting moonclips for the K frame, but my gunsmith machined a a set of fitting moonclips so I have about 20 here to load up and use.

I love the moon clips for competition, because I can`t really lose any brass when it slips out of my fingers. But the cylendar has to be machined in order to use moon clips and that machining cannot be reversed.

So maybe get a second cylendar if you plan to move torwards moon clips.

I've probably made a couple thousand K Frame reloads using speedloaders since 1983. I always had enough space.

didn`t say it dosn`t work, just that you havr to cant the speedloader a bit, where on a L Frame (like the 686) it will go in straight and flush.........

It works on the K frame and different speedloaders might handle different, what is why I suggested to go in a shop and try different ones.......

I've never used anything except Safariland speed loaders on my K frame Model 66. Never had an issue with fit or function.

                          I prefer moonclips to speedloaders.

Lighter, cheaper, more compact, easier to load revolver, more secure ejection of cartridges from cylinder.

But I have never used moonclips with a .357 revolver. My primary moonclip experience is with the 9mm Ruger LCR.

Another vote for the Safariland Comp II.

Carried them on duty along with my 586, very fast and easy to use - no twisting or turning, just push in until you feel the click. Then just let the loader fall to the ground as you close the cylinder.

Don't know what year it was, but Smith & Weasal did produce a factory issue cut away left-side stock to ease the use of a speed loader.

When you have the opportunity to view both the pre and the post factory revolver stocks at the same time the obvious becomes apparent.

Since the inner-web trumps actual decades of shooting & reloading on the range I'll just go back and figure out what actually happened really couldn't have happened.
