don't think they're on the list, I had a M40 before, it's an ok gun, didn't impress me much.

I've got an M40 and the S40, better gun than anything else I've ever shot!

Don't know about the 9mm, but remember that the Steyr's were designed as .40 cals (with fully supported chambers) and engineered downwards to the 9mm. As opposed to other manufacturers such as Glock that designed 9mm's (with only partially supported chambers) and tried to engineer up into a .40. Poorly done IMO.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with either of them!

I like .45 only, but really want this gun and since .45 is not available I have to compromise...

I'd also like some input on the MA-1 if that is the model you are referring to. I think they are going for under 400 dollars which is definitely in my price range.

Yup, I went with an M40-A1 because that is what the gun was originally designed for, and I'm a fan of getting guns in the caliber they were originally designed for. However if you're a .45 man, I'd go for the M9. You have plenty of firepower at your disposal with your .45s, enjoy the cheap to shoot factor of 9mm for a change.

Id go with the .40 then the m40a-1 handels the round really well in my opinion. It takes out some of the snap the the .40 has. (not that its to bad to begin with) My g/f loves my m40a1

If you say it was designed around .40, then it seems like the way to go.

I have the M9A1, as well as 9mm Glocks. In comparison, the Steyr has better ergonomics, a much better trigger and certainly looks better. However, unlike Glocks which can be run without much, perhaps no cleaning, I find the Steyr can fail-to-eject if it hasn't been cleaned and properly lubed.

As for 9mm vs 40mm in the Steyr, it would come down to preference. 40 seems very "snappy" to me.

Steyr M9-A1 hands down for me. I love it, wife loves it and everyone I let shoot it instantly falls in love with it. Best egronomics on the market. Lowest bore axis. All steel internals. Combat sights (gotta admit, I love the Traps).
My Steyr M9-A1 eats ANYTHING I feed it.

                          Biko,
Have you called SIA and got the new extractor? Great customer service over there, ask for Jeff. You may have the old model that can cause some issues.
                          Hope this helps...

Mike brings up another good point, SAI has phenomenal customer service too! They compare to the fantastic CS I get with Kel Tec also!

I've had my M40 for several years now, (date code S00) and it shoots everything I've ever put through it. Never a failure of any kind, no FTF, no FTE, etc.

And yes, the ergonomics of the gun were what sold me, the reliability and ease of shooting kept me!

                            Cheers,
                            Paul

Mike bring up the only technical issue with the Steyr. The M9 has had some extractor issues. Not on every pistol mind you. Just some. Even so, SAI will swap the extractor if you have any problems.

As for caliber choice,,, I now have two M40-A1 pistols. They're great!

I will probably buy an M9-A1 too. Jut because I like the Steyr so much.

ANYONE who wants to sell their S version in any caliber please give me a PM. (Yeah, like that will ever happen)
