    Consignment SCORE! Updated w/ PICS!!!

Found a used S&W 3953 (3rd Gen, compact, stainless steel/alloy, DAO, single stack 9mm) at my LGS. The 3953 has been on my "wanted" list but figured I wouldn't come across one for years.

Had to wait 40 days until the 3953 came home.

EDIT: Finally picked it up and shot it on 4/5/09.

The fit/finish on this 3rd gen S&W is pretty impressive. Without the slide mounted safety, it's a very slim gun.

Only put 100 rounds through it, but didn't experience any malfunctions.

I know exactly how you feel. I have done it a few times myself.

Which shop was this? I might have to stop in tomorrow and see what's left.

Was it used or consignment? If it was consignment, you could DROS it and take it home in 10 days. If it was actually used, then you would be right in having to wait 39 more days...

The shop had just finished tagging it for consignment along with 20 other pre-lock S&W revolvers and 3rd generation autos. I think one person dropped off nearly 30 S&W's. Apparently, the shop sold about 10 in just the first day.

39 more days until the 3953 comes home.
39 days? I thought they didn't put them on display until they had already done the serial check.

Some shops will display consignment guns the day they come in and spark interest. If you like it put a deposit on it and wait the 30 days to start the paper work.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

Yup! They start selling the consignment stuff as soon as they get it. You pay in full, then wait 30 days to start the DROS.

I think it's common practice. Turner's does the same.

30 days? What's that about? Did the OP just buy a new handgun so that's why he had to wait the additional 30 days or is this a law on consignment guns?

My 3913 is one of my favorites. Your 3953 looks like an early one with the stainless trigger. Does it have a stainless hammer too? S&W switched to blued triggers and hammers later in the production and they also started using more MIM (metal injection molded) parts.

Hammer is stainless also. The shop also had a 3914... blue/black version of the 3913.

It's intriguing how these 3rd gen S&W autos weren't any more popular when they were being produced. They seem very well put together.
