    Dummy ammo

Is there a source for realistic looking dummy "blank" ammo. For say a elderly person with altimeters.
    Thanks

If I was an elderly person with 'altimeters' I'm sure I'd have all kinds of uses for blank ammo. Especially if was an actor in Hollywood. Hey, I watch television, I'm well informed.

I will expand. At some point in the horrific illness that alzhiemers one looses their ability to be a responsable gun owner. Responsable gun ownperson would take that persons guns or render them useless. My father has lost capacity. I would rather render them useless. Than take them away. They give him peace of mind.

Depending on how close an imitation would pass his inspection, you might use some of the brass&plastic versions. Do remember that almost all dummy rounds are designed to be distinctively different from live ammo, for safety purposes. A good imitation is kind of not the point.

Here's a site that caters to re-enactors and such, and the rounds are inert - http://www.dummybullet.com/pistol%20calibers.html

If you go that route, you need to be incredibly thorough in getting all live ammo out of the house. And even then, he might buy more for some reason.

Would reloaded rounds without powder and a used primer be close enough?

Or is he aware enough to know the dimple is a used primer?

Is it possible to modify the gun and say remove the firing pin? Might be better than relying on non firing ammo. It wouldn't destroy the gun as most can be removed when stripping the gun.

I'd just think that a firing gun, even with dummy ammo is still a potential hazard.

I say this because I know exactly what you're going through. Last year my father developed a brain tumor, glioblastoma. And it rendered him rather incoherent for a lot of his remaining days. And all he had was a revolver. We took it from his house but he'd ask about it at times and wasn't happy when I told him we removed it. In his more lucid moments he understood, but there were days he wasn't so lucid, and he got upset.

Prayers to you and your family.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

I would just remove them from the house. A live gun with inert ammo could still cause issues. An inop gone with live ammo could still be dangerous. Personally, I'd pull the guns and I think you could legally do it.

Would it be easier to mod the guns so they won't fire (mess with firing pin, etc)

If you're this worried I think it would be better to remove the guns.. I know its hard, and it sucks.. but what if he waves a gun at the police, they won't know it wont fire. Lots of bad could happen in a variety of ways.

Pull the guns from the home. Period

There are too many things to go wrong, even with non functioning ammo or a non functioning gun.

Say he pulls it on a salesman, neighbor, kid, etc. and they call the police. The police come and in his confused state, which may not be easily recognizable and the police have to use deadly force.

I once had a similar call, but we got lucky because the son showed up to tell us he had disabled the gun by removing the firing pin. I am grateful that it turned out the way it did. He was old and angry when he had his episodes. He pistol whipped a kid who was soliciting work as a gardener. The old guy was a WWII Marine who hit the beaches at Guadalcanal, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He had a Purple Heart and a Navy Cross. The gardener kid was going into the Marine Corps and didn't press charges. The son was forced to put him into assisted living after that incident.
