    Springfield 1911 staked sight

I know it's no secret that these sometimes come loose and mine has finally started to although the wiggle was ever so slight. I used a center punch to mush the tenon a bit more which definitely strengthened it to not wiggling anymore, but I'm curious if this is eventually going to loosen up again?

I like the basic appearance of this pistol and really don't want to have it dovetailed or put some new fancy wizzbang sight on it. If this loosens up again can it be brazed or welded on?

Clean it up with solvent/degreaser, then epoxy or use Loctite bonding compound. Loctite makes primers to apply to the metal for a really tight bond.

Replace it if you carry it or use it for SD. I either have bad luck, or both Colt and Springfield have forgotten how to stake a front sight. If it is a range toy, you're probably GTG.

It seems weird to me that there are 1911s that are 70-80 years old that still have their front sights yet my one year old Springer has had it come loose.

It's good for now, but if it comes loose I'll probably have Springer just replace the blade.

            Modern large front sites

the original GI style front sites dont get loose because they are so tiny, the more modern large hi profile sites are much bigger and the small tenon wasnt designed for a large hi profile sight like that

modern dove tail types are much more secure for the newer style hi profile combat / target sights than the original tenon type.

thats probably why COLT uses a larger tenon now.

It can also be silver soldered into place by a good gunsmith.

Thanks for the very kind offer Zoner. I didn't even see this until today, but yesterday made the decision to sent it back to Springfield for repair otherwise I would have taken you up on your offer. They got me with the free repair and free round trip shipping.

I can answer that Question for you. Yes its going to eventually come off. It happened to me. I also did the same thing and Peened the Tenon...Dremeled everything smooth, and about 25 rds later the front sight went ByBy.
