    pistol lowers

ok, i want to build a ar pistol and had a ? on the lower. a buddy has some rra lowers in stock and i heard that they could be drosed as a pistol even though they are not marked pistol, is this correct? i know about the single shot situation and he has no problem with me putting it together at his shop since i put all of his lowers together for him.

If they are to be DROS'd as a pistol they must be complete at the time of DROS. You cant just DROS a stripped lower as a pistol. AFAIK as long as the lower is built up, is only a single shot and has all the necessary parts to function, it can then be DROS'd as a pistol. It can have any size barrel over 6" on it at time of DROS which can be replaced later (if you only have a 16" barrel it could DROS and be replaced w a pistol length later)

IMHO a lower marked "PISTOL" and built into a single shot configuration is more peace of mind because most people cant believe it is a pistol (and if you get harassed because it must be too evil to be legal!!! )... you can always point to the part under the serial # and and question them, "What does that say?" :PRICELESS:

thats what i thought. i was thinking of having the lower engraved pistol so i myself would not be confused ,since i have 2 other rra lowers.

I think piece of mind wont really be worth much if someone is harassing you due to your "evil gun". I don't see someone stopping in their tracks and reversing their thinking just because at some point you had the word "pistol" engraved onto your lower...

So whats the law regarding selling a pistol engraved OLL via PPT? Can I sell it stripped or its has to be a complete single shot pistol??

It has to be single shot at the time of dros....get a bobsled.

And then there is the whole idea that the law does not say that you can convert it......

And it's easier not to answer, but many do anyway (that whole help-each-other reciprocity thing).

What part do you NOT get exactly...?

To purchase a legit single-shot AR pistol:

"Pistol" marked lower + Pistol Buffer tube assembly

Bullet Button maglock w/ a "Bobsled" single shot follower.

                        or

Bullet Button maglock w/ a Sinclair single shot follower in a mag that has been blocked and the spring has been removed.

Start DROS return in 10 days take posession of your new AR pistol. If you desire you can now use a 10 round mag.

Do NOT remove the maglock or add a foreward grip or a buttstock.
                        Anything you are unclear about?

Marked 'Pistol' receivers are the safest to use as you know without question that they were logged in as a pistol receiver. RRA has a pistol marked receiver. Imagine if this was not the case and you can take any new stripped receiver... everyone would be going into the stores and taking whatever receiver they want and calling/making it a pistol for DROS.
thats why i was asking. i thought it might have something to do with the way stripped receivers are now drosed, since you have to be 21 now.

The new ATF 4473 will notate if the firearm you are buying is a "handgun", "long gun" (rifle/shotgun) or "other" (reciever/frame/pistol grip only shotgun/Title II/etc.).

However, the CA DROS only allows "handgun" or "long gun".

So, currently, if you purchase/transfer a stripped AR reciever, it will be marked "other" on the 4473 but DROS's as a "long gun".
Unless it is marked as a pistol lower, then it will DROS'd as a "handgun". But, then it will need to be made into a single-shot pistol prior to DROS, in order to bypass the approved list.
