    226 Legion SAO update

I will try to give regular updates on the gun. So, the first 350 ran perfectly and I shot another 350 today with ZERO issues so far. 700rds total, zero malfunctions whatsoever.

I will try to post a couple short videos I took with my phone because I had technical difficulties with my camera, darn phone ran out of memory about half way through the day!!!!!. Here is the gist...

I started by shooting a few groups and 10rd groups at about a shot per second netted silver dollar sized groups at 7yds.

I then shot at my steel IDPA sized tgt at 100yds and got hits at a boring one for one, so I decided to take head shots at 100. I was able to score about 50 percent hits on the head box. The only thing was that I had to totally obscure the tgt head box to get the hits , so I was sort of shooting blind, I will take it though.

I then tried to shoot my 6 inch steel popper at 150yds and needless to say my hit percentages sucked, haha. Out of 20 shots I rang this target a whopping 4 times. BUT, I benched the pistol and could hit the 6 inch popper about 30% of the time at 150yds. I was impressed that the pistol could hit it with some regularity, the misses were VERY close and if the tgt were a 12in circle I imagine the hit rate would have been about 70 % at 150yds.

Next I did some close work, starting with a hip fire drill and was able to get a lot of .81 second draw and fire times on tgt at about 3yds from the buzzer and out of a holster. I scored a succession of .71 second times and was ultimately rewarded with a .69 second time. I have video of a few .71 second drills but my phone says the file is too large to upload.....I AM A TECH IDIOT!

I then ran a drill where you start with one in the gun, do a slide lock reload and then fire the next shot on tgt...My goal was a sub 3 second time and did manage to get a 2.76 second time, that only happened once! My solid times were between 3.09 and 3.45 seconds. This drill was shot on full size steel at 12 yds. I have 3.16 on video but the same issue as above...ARGH

Then I ran a few successions of the Iron cross and of the three times I ran that drill, two were shot clean. I was not going slow but was not blazing fast either, the goal was to balance speed and accuracy. (The Iron cross consists of 24 total rounds fired, 6 postures, and 4 individual shots per position) the drill was shot twice at 12 yds on steel and once at 7yds on paper.

I finished by shooting my 3,2,1 drill and the goal was 6 seconds (I created this drill, this drill consists of loading three mags with 3rds, 2rds, and 1rd and shooting in that order. mag changes between each two shots and ending on slide lock) My best time was a 4.46 with splits between .14 and .16...for me this is FAST. My average time was around the 6 second mark, many below and some above.

All in all I had a great time banging away with this pistol today and look forward to getting better with it and working with it more, I WILL shoot it at the next IDPA match.

I am not running into any abnormal wear on the finish even after a total of close to 500 draw strokes, typical wear finish to the trigger guard where the holster retains the pistol but nothing outside of that.

Sounds like you had a good time. Did you find that the trigger got better with use?

I am using a mixed bag of stuff, blazer brass, win white box, federal range ammo, a few types of personal defense hollow point stuff. All good so far. 115 to 147. None of my reloads yet but have run some range reloads that are known for sucking and being underpowered, ran them fine too.

AH, I see you noted no wear, but any updates on that issue?

Is there such a thing as a P229 SAO?

I have no wear that would be seen as unusual, there is a SMALL bit of wear in the finish at the trigger guard where the pistol is retained by the holster and very light, almost unnoticeable wear near the muzzle at the front corners of the slide....totally typical stuff when you work from a holster. It is doing remarkably well. No malfunctions at all, fired another 150rds this weekend. runs like a champ.

I know that it is hard to say, but some folks have accredited the wear to the PVC finish. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.

All I can say is this. It is my opinion that the slight wear i do see is totally typical and normal when working from a holster. I know some folks seem to have excessive wear or claim to, but that is not the case here. When you work from a holster any finish will show some wear. That is reality.
