    Off roster handguns

This is my first post so I'm sorry if any of this is confusing or posted incorrectly. My father in law lives in Oregon and has a multitude of handguns. Many that would be off roster in CA. Is there anyway for me to legal take ownership of one of these guns that would be off roster here or am I out of luck?

Sorry, father can, father-in-law cannot for off roster.

    Does your wife like guns?
Father to daughter gift is legit.

Must be straight up and down the family tree: father, mother, son, daughter, grandparents.

In-laws, cousins, brother to sibling, etc. are no go.

List the guns and we might be able to help more.

Use search feature with "intra family transfer" as search phrase, many posts with answers to your question and the others that will come up. And Welcome to the site.

FIL can transfer to his wife, then I'm pretty sure wife can then transfer to him. Am I wrong on this?
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Yep. Just have your wife get a Firearm Safety Card and her father can give any gun to her by sending it to an FFL in CA and she can do the interfamilial transfer. No reason for you to have your wife transfer it over to your name.

Not to jack OP question but if a relative say in another state's purchases a handgun. Off roster to us, and he sells it to me instantly. He would just have to get rid of mags and ppt to me right?

So couldn't he do the same?

Agreed. Otherwise there would be a whole lot more of off roster pistols making their way into CA

I never knew that, for example if I was to buy a gun from out of state in law, it's not ppt.

Learned something new today. Make sense though

Your talking "off-Roster pistols" The out of state family member may bring the handgun to a CA FFL, or ship it to the FFL if the FFL is willing to accept shipment from a non-FFL.

Off-roster handguns may not be sold, but intrafamily gifts are transferable.

Can't buy from an out of state in law if it's not on the roster. Good ol CA laws

                          Off roster handguns

FIL can do an intrafamilial interstate gift to your wife.
