    1911 22 conversion recomendations

Looking for a 22 conversion kit for full size 1911. I know of advantage arms and ceiner. Any others out their? What would you recommend.
This would be a dedicated kit on a spare 1911 that I have, so will not be swapping back an forth.

Went through this same decision. Ended up going with a GSG/Sig dedicated 22 pistol. Turners has them on sale occasionally for $280. It was set up just like my .45 and takes many of the some of the same parts as a .45. More importantly the weight is near the same. Great pistol and runs well. I figured for the same price as a conversion I can have a whole gun.

I like the advantage arms target version the best. I have the sig/gsg gun and don't particularly care for it. It's reliable enough, but would have to put in too much money to set it up properly for me. The kimber set up is nice and very accurate, but its a little on the light side and was ammo sensitive before i did some major tuning. The advantage arms unit was by far the most accurate and reliable, and didnt require any tuning to work right. I really like the weight of it too. I prefer this set up because even if you dedicate a frame to it, you could still use the frame for a full power conversion as opposed to the gsg pf kimber guns. IMHO

The two best on the market are the Marvel conversion and the Nelson Custom conversion. Bob Marvel made the original design and both of these customs are based on it. There is nothing more accurate on the market.

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

+1 Nelson custom. Mine runs most subsonic ammo.

It would help to know what 1911 you will be using as some of the conversion kits are not recommended for certain 1911's for safety reasons (Springfield and Taurus for example).

The sig conversion kit goes on sale for like $160, it's a great deal depending on which 1911 you have.

I've owned a marvel and kimber conversion. My marvel had the optics mount and although it was accurate and well-built I recall having to affix it to the frame. I believe it used a set screw or something and had it's own reciprocating slide to the assembly. I sold it years ago and since used the kimber kit on my GM2 and I really enjoy it. Same form and function as a traditional 1911, cheap and easy-to-load magazines and very accurate. I equipped mine with Dawson sights specifically for it and it's been quite reliable. You can also buy service kits for about 20 dollars. However, it does not LRHO. I believe you can get aftermarket followers that will serve that purpose, though.

I'm happy with the Kimber set-up.
Works great for plinking....fun and accurate enough.
The Marvel / Nelson are supposed to be the most accurate.

                          From the Marvel website:
"Tests from a machine rest have delivered groups around 1.8" at 50 yards ... for 100 shots with inexpensive ammo (see the sample test targets)! Compare that to extremely expensive European target pistols that boast 1-1/2" groups (measured center-to-center, which gives you a smaller measurement than edge-to-edge) at 50 yards for 10 shots."

I have a JA Ciener kit that I bought new in 1992 w/15 round mag for $150.

I runs great with CCI mini-mags on both my Colt 1991 .45 (blued) and my AMT Hardballer .45 (stainless) with 23# mainsprings, but I tired of swapping out top ends just to shoot .22 LR.

Bought a stripped Olympic Arms Matchmaster frame in 2013 and used parts from SARCO, Numrich, Wolff, and Hogue to complete it. The frame is parked (to match the Ciener parked barrel). I used a Wolff 19# mainspring and it will shoot most anything from Rem Subsonics to HV rounds.

It has fixed sights but is very accurate (minute of soda-can angle at 75' using a rest) and has never given me any problems.

                            Regards,

                            Jim

If you can find one, the most reliable I've used are the old Colt conversion unit.
