    A Tec 9 specifically is a 'by-name' 'assault weapon'.
    UZI
    Encom MP-9 and MP-45
RPB Industries Inc. sM10 and sM11
    SWD Incorporated M11
    Advance Armament Inc. M-11
    Military Armament Corp. Ingram M-11
    Intratec TEC-9
    Sites Spectre
    Sterling MK-7
    Calico M-950
    Bushmaster Pistol
Other similar models would need some kind of magazine locking device, because the mag is not in the grip, and would be restricted to 10-round mags to a new buyer.

Kimmel AP9 as well. Its actually more reliable than the tec-9.
I think there is one for sale on here right now.

I need to do research on the reliability and different models of Tech N9ne models I have a bunch of mags in storage outside of CA for them. I kind of want one and hopefully one kept clean and with appropriate ammo will work.

I'll buy one once I move. I remember messing with a Kimel AP-9 of some sort it wasn't wholly reliable. Also I'm not willing to pay too much for any Tec-9.

I remember seeing them for sale at my LGS next to Uzis and Mac 10s back in the day.

For what it is worth, I have a Tec-9 (yes mine is a RAW) and it is the only gun I regret ever buying, ever. The accuracy is poor, the trigger is poor, the quality is poor.
Having 32 rounds at a time was kind of cool, but those days are now gone...

I wish I never sold my Calico and Cobray M11. The Calico was reliable but accuracy was impeded by the iron sights. The M11 was reliable enough with ball ammo. If you're going to get one, get one that is worth having.

The Tec-9 is the least accurate, most unreliable firearm of any type or size I have ever fired in my life.

I remember some folks sporting Tec9s back in the days at a SoCal outdoor public open range. Not the type of crowd I'd like to associate with but they seemed to enjoy blasting away at a hillside as fast as they could. They had quite a few malfunctions but they didn't mind it as long as they had lots of spent casings flying up in the air. Maybe I'm being biased on how I feel about the pistol due to the people I associate it with.

Me and my next door neighbors may well have been those idiots 25 years ago or so in Lytle Creek. We used to sit in the back of a Nissan Hardbody with a Tec-9, a Calico .22, a couple cases of beer and a bag of yesca. Truth be told, we were actually the sane ones compared to some of the locos that used to be out there.

Point is, you're not being biased at all.

I had an Uzi pistol back in the 80s. It was very nice and reliable.

Would an AR-15 in 9mm give similar aesthetics, especially one with a Colt SMG-style magwell?

Well, other than the buffer tube, but it should be close enough.
