    Self defence rounds for 9mm

    For those who have done some research or actual live testing;
For home self defense, would you choose 124 grain +P or 147 grain (not +P).
My thinking is to get the 147 grain for stopping power.
Since both would be hollow point, is there any "over penetration" concerns with a +P cartridge in a home, self defence scenario?

        Popularity contests can be interesting,

but ballistic testing is more consistent and therefore more meaningful...

          Thanks for the links.
This is not a popularity contest.
There seams to be more 9mm variances than any other cartridge.
I'm tired of buying crap from Freedom and the likes.
9mm is the only caliber that I do not have straight up defence rounds for. So I'm asking about ballistics and in the home safety.

They're so close it doesn't really matter. If they both feed and cycle reliably I would use whatever you can find or get the best price on.

              I carry 124 +p.

                  It is about shot placement......

How fast you can get rounds into the bad person until the threat is gone...

I don't care if you wing them or miss..... statistically the Germans had no issue with 115grain ball ammo.... NATO still uses a ton of 115 grain ball.....

Pick a good ammo that runs 100% in your guns....

You can debate how much more power the new 150 grain 9mm delivers out of your micro pistols sub 3" barrel...

But get a gun that works
Get an ammo that works in the gun

Spend the rest of the $$$ on classes.... and more classes.....
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Let's not turn this into a debate on training.
Everything Hermosabeach said is spot on.
But, that is not the piont of this thread.

HermosaBeach is spot on about shot placement. The training is about being proficient and about discipline picking your fire zone. Picking the ammo that will not over penetrate and put innocent bystanders in danger is also a must.

I was surprised when I was told that a normal 9mm will penetrate drywall much more easily than a .223/.556 will. If that is true, just about any hollowpoint that gave good results in the tests above, and cycles reliably in your pistol, ought to ruin a bad guy's day;without the need for +P. IMHO, the key is to find good factory brand ammunition, at a good price, and test a box with your pistol before committing to it for HD.

Here's an interesting commentary from Bob Owens (RIP) at Bearing Arms titled: "Stupid People Shouldn't Vote (On Ammo Or Anything Else)". The comments and replies are also interesting.

Based on this I have 9mm Federal HST 124 gr +P in my PPS.

Buy a quality, current generation loading from one of the big brands ( Federal, Winchester, CCI/Speer, etc ) and then don't worry about it...

I found the +P in either 124gr or 147gr was just a bit more than I wanted in my small barrel XDS or XD 4".

Settled in on 147gr for me as I wanted one home defense round for all my 9mm (XDS, XD9 4", XD9 5", and VP9)
