Issue with my M&P Shield 3"

Hey all,

Just recently picked this pistol up, shot it a few weeks ago, and finally decided to clean it. Low and behold, the slide would NOT come off, and kept getting stiffer to reset. Finally, I man handled it, got it off, and noticed that the spring in the locking block for the slide stop was poking up. Some how, it became unseated and was protruding upwards causing it to snag on the slide. I fixed it, but am looking for a replacement part (as I had to bend it back to fit inside the locking block groove). I only found this site:

But they're out of stock. Anyone out there know any other sites that might carry this part? Took me awhile, as the default schematics don't even list this part, since most are for the fullsize model, not compact.

Pretty bummed this happened on a NEW pistol - barely shot 100 rounds through it.

contact S&W

being a new firearm they shouldn't have any issue replacing whatever you need, even if it comes down to sending you an entire unit - spring, guide rod, and, block

that should have never happened, hard to say what may have been compromised, which is why replacing the guide rod too may be a good idea

Ask S&W if they can send the part to you. Working on M&Ps is easy.

Out of curiosity, how come you specified 3" in the thread title? Aren't all M&P Shields 3"?

like teflon said, you may not need to sent it back - personally i think its a great idea to learn basic repairs on firearms you own

buy a punch set, a pair of needle nose pliers, tap hammer, flat head screw driver and you're probably good to go

Yea that's the plan. I know, decided to clean and remove the mag disconnect. Next plan is the apex trigger and D/C kit.

Hehe, my workbench should rival most gunsmiths' workbenches

I fixed it but the spring is a little chewed up from getting the slide off; would rather have a 100% part in its place. Let's hope to them just sending me the part!

this issue has come up a couple times at smithandwesson.com. Some folks have reinstalled/repaired the spring and some called smithandwesson and were sent a new spring.

S&W will probably send you a new one. I needed to replace the recoil spring on mine and couldn't find one anywhere. When I contacted S&W asking where I could buy one, then sent me one, no charge. It was a welcome surprise.

Yes. Regardless, it's only purpose appears to be to disengage to sear so dry firing to release (like an XD), is unnecessary.

just picked up a shield myself... is the takedown lever and slide stop supposed to be THIS hard to engage?? both the lever and slide stop requires as much pressure from BOTH thumbs to use; the takedown lever does not want to twist down, and the slide stop requires unusual amount of pressure to push up. does this loosen with time and use? Or do i have a defective gun?

(i watched videos on youtube and it seems everyone's takedown lever just requires a simple flick to twist 90degrees, while mine takes both thumbs to push down)
