    Lubricant

Is there a lubricant that doesn't coagulate & get gummy if applied to the inside of a handgun that isn't used for 4 or 5 years, maybe more? I recently looked at a few handguns I've not used (or ever used) for a few years and the innards have gummed up a bit. I don't recall what I used, I know it wasn't WD 40. But it was most likely "Remoil" or something else fairly simple.

Any suggestions? Other than "shoot the damn things once in a while".

Any oil will dry up and be gummy if it sits exposed to air for 6 years.

      you can try eezox.

from the few reviews and searches i've done on the web, it seems to be good to go for long term storage that isn't cosmoline or a sealed plastic bag.

i use it for lubing and a quick wipe down of surfaces with rag.

it is a quick dry lube. pretty much a cloth with eezox squirted on it and wipe down all surface parts and a q-tip and wipe down of all internals is enough.

i am unsure of how much one should apply for long term storage, but i know for guns i don't use few a few months, i just apply a very thin layer and it is fine.

I agree. A tiny amount works well. For rifles, I use Hoppes, as I had a rust problem once.

Thin coat of Mobil 1 with a little Tetra gun grease overlay on sliding parts stays wet in the safe and even after getting hot shooting a few hundred rounds.

Not sure about 5 years, but both Hoppes and RemOil dry out just sitting in the safe for a few months.

Synthetic motor oil. The best thing you can oil your gun with. Forget all that expensive crap....waste of money. My preference is Mobil 1 5W-20. $6.49 a quart.

Even though they (CLP) says it doesn't, I have had it gum up a 1911 once.

                      Break Free Collector.
I live near the ocean, and have used it for several years now, with no rusting on any of my old arms. I do wipe them down with an oiled rag, and run a boresnake with it applied, at least once a year.

I use Hornady One Shot. It is an aerosol that you spray and it dries up leaving a coat of protection that protects against rust.

                            Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the other suggestion too, there are some I've not heard of. And one I was reminded of. Does Outers still make that black "gun grease" and does that hold up? I have some Tetra, haven't used it that I can remember. Then again, maybe I have and that's why only some of the stored guns are doing this and the Tetra ones are OK.

Too many pistols already, and I'm picking up another tomorrow.

Outers still makes the graphite grease but I've see it dried and flaky. Tetra, imo. is good to go...it's been out there for a long time. The classic preservative grease is Rig...one step short of cosmoline in protection but far easier to remove.

I really like a good hardwood floor wax for furniture and exterior protection...TreWax or MiniWax. Easy to apply and no issues with protection...we lived north of Half Moon Bay about 1/2 mile from the Pacific...I'd wax the guns once a year and zero signs of corrosion.
