Range report - first time out with Ruger 357 Blackhawk

Its impractical, a novelty, not really a fighting weapon. Single action, load gate reloading, and unconcealable with a 6.5" barrel.

Took it to the range, loaded up 5 rounds of PPU 158gr magnums, cocked it, then BOOOOOOOOM! Holy **** that was awesome! Fired the next 4 rapidly at 7 yards with my strong hand. The fire ball was amazing stretching a while foot in front of the muzzle and about 5 inches in diameter at its widest point. Hit each one into an 8 inch target. Man this thing is fun.

Need to scratch an itch for shooting? 20 rounds on this bad boy and Im good.

RUGER NMBH 6.5" in .357 Magnum.

My First CF pistol. Still have it. Kids are already wrestlin' over it.

When you settle down, you should find that it will shoot inside of 3" at 25 yards.

Try Freedom Munitions 158 gr. FMJ-FP and XTP loads.

Hand load some 180 gr. XTP's with a thermonuclear charge of 2400 and you are ready for deer and hogs.

Absolute joy to shoot. It's almost a carbine. Hunter 1100-48 holster is outstanding for field carry.

      Somethin'about'em. . .

Fun range report and I dunno ... seems like it would make a good SD weapon.

I find myself wanting to say ..... it's just a 357 , what have you been shooting?
But , that's just my curiosity.
I will say the Hunter 1100 series mentioned are nice field holsters ..... and they wear/age well. I do like the 5 1/2 inch barreled rugers more. I sat in a bar all nite once with one in 44 on my hip and nobody noticed ..... but I guess the M65 field jacket kept it covered and before our bunny cops said it was ok , used to carry it on a belt slung crosswise under my hunting jacket while bow hunting ......nobody seemed to notice that either

            Whaaaaa?!?
Probably one of the most "practical" handguns you can own! Seriously, what kinda goblins nest are you stirring up that a .357 wouldn't suffice?

Its not the cartridge. 357 is awesome. Its the cowboy era design in the Blackhawk. In a fight, Id prefer something that would at least reload with a moon clip, a DA/SA revolver, slightly shorter barrel for target transitions and concealability amongst others. To carry safely, its also a 5 shooter. Theres no, firing pin block to protect accidental discharge from drop. JMHO

All new model single actions by Ruger have the transfer bar safety device. No need to carry only 5 for decades now.

                      Nice way to put it.

No go try some X-Frames and you'll see that there is much more itch out there that needs to be scratched.

The Blackhawk .357 is one of those guns where somehow it all comes together really well when you shoot it.
Yes, it is the same size as the .44mag models, but that extra weight makes the .357 so easy to shoot.
Not being beaten by the recoil, you will probably find it easy to stay on the sights when firing, resulting in good accuracy.
And, being a .357 in a .44 frame, it will never wear out.
This is a good one to have and hand down for generations to come.

I've been toying with getting a 4 5/8" stainless flat top in 44 Special. I like the conventional "4 clicks" and case hardened frame, neither of which Ruger has, but for some reason the stainless, flat top and barrel length looks nice.

And, with the 180 gr. XTP round and 6.5" Bbl, the .357 Mag. punches well above its weight.

I love my Blackhawk convertible, it's currently my favorite handgun to shoot. I have plenty of .357's so I went with the 45ACP/45LC. If you think 357 is hot you should try Buffalo Boar +P 45LC bear loads. Hot stuff. For better shoot ability I recommend picking up a Super Blackhawk hammer, it is a drop in fit and has a lower angle and wider spur, a lot easier to cock.
