Sadly, what actually happened in the US Defense Plants prior to or during WW2 will never be known. It is all speculation & second hand knowledge now.

When I entered the Workforce the WW2 generation was still in their mid to late 50's. Reading about it or hearing about it is not the same thing as 1st hand experience. Obviously some accounts that I heard back then had more credibility than others. In any case they sure did make for some great Sea Stories.

Southern California had some kind of 1911 assembly role up until the early 1960's. So it is possible to still get some eye witness factory floor accounts of yesteryear regarding the 1911. Remember, what factory officials said happened may very well been different from the floor execution. And that part from any factory at anytime in history I doubt will never change.

The days of mass production of go-to-war individual firearms completion under one roof was over when President Ronald put a Star Wars fork in the Russian bear threat.

I worked my colt's s80 trigger, but it still is inferior in overall feel to my old Rock Island! The plus side, is that drop or slam fires using heavy slide springs (23lb for .45 super, though i believe its a bit heavier than needed) are impossible.
Good point on the slam fire safe. I hadn't thought of that.

In the late 70's early 80's it was real popular to install `30 pound springs in a Colt 1911. The heavier the spring the more man you were. This abomination of an idea would bend the sheet out of the slide & frame fit. The bigger the misalignment the more heavier spring you needed. Simple.

Along came IPSC where your re-sprung & 1911 improvements were supposed to work and put an end to such ultra heavy spring nonsense back in the trash can from where it came in the 1st place.
