    1970's Smiths at .....

Just tossing out an FYI - there are three excellent condition Smiths @ Guns, Fishing & Stuff in Vacaville. They're on the "30 day hold" with release date of 17 May. All like new, pinned barrels on the two that should have them -

Smith 37 in 38 SP, blued, 3" barrel & square butt, service stocks - $495.00. With box.
Smith 29 in presentation case, 6.5" pinned bbl, nickel with target stocks, screwdriver & cleaning rod - $1,200.00.
Smith 586 in 38 SP, blued 4". Not pinned of course, carries 70's target stocks. I don't recall the price on this one.

There was a Smith 60 2" but of the group I decided to grab it.

Side note - Krausewerks in San Mateo has a NIB, Colt SAA 3rd gen in 44 Special, 7 1/2" bbl. No idea on price.

Good deal on the 37 in excellent condition..Will be interested in seeing the photos.

My model 60-7 stainless is a bedside/carry gun and I just now looked at the receipt. Purchased it new at B&B Gun Sales in Westminster in 1995 for $302. With the case hardened trigger and hammer.

I don't know about the prices on the first two, probably reasonable nowadays. The 586 was not made until the eighties and as far as I know, they were only made in .357 magnum. The M29 is most probably a safe queen and is uncommon in nickel. If I was looking for a good shooting gun, I would get the 586. I have one I bought a couple of years ago and I really like it.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been wanting a 6 1/2" nickle 29 for some time to go with my '72 vintage 6 1/2 " blued gun. Drove out to take a look at it and was pleasantly surprised that it was an "S" prefix 29-2 with diamond targets. The gun looks very clean (much better in person than in my crappy pics) and will look even better once I'm able to get it home and spend some quality time with Flitz polish and Renaissance Wax. The Standard Catalog puts the manufacture date at 1965. The presentation case wasn't much but the gun was well worth the trip and price. Now just have to wait until May 18th to DROS it. Thanks again!

Regarding 586 caliber, I thought so too. But the tag said 38 Special, I looked up on line and both 357 and 38 are listed.

Very nice. Wish it was a different store though.

Okay, you made me look it up too.

Both the SCSW and the Blue Book list the 586 as only being chambered in .357 Magnum. Perhaps they marked it as a .38 because a gun chambered for .357 will shoot .38 Specials.

Hmmm. I just did the same, you're right. I suppose they may have added "38 Special" and I didn't notice the 357, if written.

Glad it worked out. S serial number and diamond grips - I'd say the price was pretty good. Even for CA.

                          They did make a run of Brazilian .38 caliber in 1994 in 2.5" - 4.25" and 6".

Quantity of 158 - 2.5" were shipped to US Distributors
23 - 4.25" were shipped to US Distributors and 6" were quantity 'unknown'. (I did read somewhere that there were about 100 'left over' that might have been given away as match prizes, but that is unsubstantiated.)

I have only seen one in my lifetime. Kind of a rare set if S&W's if you ask me.
