2nd Handgun

Hi all.
Long time reader, 1st time poster.

I am getting some money back from my taxes (close to $600) and was thinking about picking up a 2nd handgun. Last year I bought a Sig P220 and a Mossberg 500 for HD.

I was thinking about getting a used Sig P226 in 9mm. Cheaper to shoot, but the same controls as the P220. However, I could purchase a .22 conversion kit instead, which would be even cheaper to shoot. What are your thoughts on getting .22 kit vs. a 2nd handgun?

You'll be good either way. It comes down to cost.

P226 is gravy.

If you're going to grab your P220 in case SHTF, then you want to have the most practice on it. With that in mind, .22 conversion.

2 votes for the 226. 1 for the .22 kit. Is there any merit in getting a second gun on the same platform, or should I be looking at another manufacturer?

You can't go wrong with the 226, but variety is the spice of life! Branch out a bit, and take a look at some other offerings. It makes opening the safe interesting and fun!

Have you thought about a rifle like an M1 or M1 carbine from CMP or maybe a fun .22 LR like the 10/22? Seems like you need a firearm with a bit more reach for hunting or long-range zombies

How about getting a cheap 225 and the 22lr conversion to your 220. That should be close to your budget and you get a 9mm sig to shoot out of the deal.

Or how about getting the 22lr conversion for your 220 and then something fun like a 22lr rifle or revolver of some sort for around $300.

Another big +1 for the P226, I own the P220 and P226 and I must admit I like the P226 more. It's so smooth that sometimes I check to make sure it actually chambered a round as the slide came forward. It's never failed to chamber (or fail to do anything else), it's just that freakin' smooth

However, I'm also tempted to recommend the .22 conversion kit that Sig makes, so you can give us recommendations on it. I'm thinking about getting one of those myself.

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have a .22 rifle. I was thinking more along the lines of a pistol for practice purposes. You all have given me some things to consider.

I have the conversion kit for the 226. It works really well. Shoots almost any bargain 22lr with only a few cycling issues here or there and works really well if you use high velocity 22lr.

I have a P226 and a .22 conversion kit. It works perfectly with all kinds of cheap .22 ammo. The only (minor) drawbacks are that the slide does not stay open after the last shot and a spare 10rd mag will run you north of $40 if you can find one.
