    Springfield MC Operator finish?

    Hey Guys/Gals

Does anybody know what type of finish is used on the MC Operator?
I'm buying one off here but haven't drosd it yet. But I was at gunshop other day and held a new one, I LOVE the gun but I didn't like the finish. The black looked like a cheap shiny paint? Ive seen cheaper 1911s with better finishes.

I'm going to shoot the crap out of it so I don't really care but I was just curious how durable the finish is and if it has same finish as the frame?

The finish does have a sheen to it, but it is pretty durable from my experience.

Ok cool. I'm happy as long as its somewhat durable. I wonder if armory kote is same as cerakote. Thanks again

I'm not sure, but I believe armory kote is just Springfield brand of cerakote

The coating on my safety started to peel off after 300 rounds. Was dissapointed when i saw that. Not sure if the whole gun has the same coating.

I've shot ~7k rounds through mine, drawing from a kydex holster, and it shows a bit of wear on the sharp parts near the muzzle. So whatever it is, it isn't bad.

Armory Kote is a type of Spray-on Teflon finish that was used before Cerakoat came into existence. If Springfield switched to Cerakoat, it would be more durable than Armory Kote. Cerakote is ceramic based rather than Teflon, and actually has a lower coefficient of friction than Teflon.

Not 100% sure on this, ,but my understanding is that Armory Kote is either the same as, or nearly indistinguishable from, KG Gunkote. I mean... they even spell coat the same way, lol.

KG coatings offers several different blends of Gunkote, from what I have seen and read, most all of the bake on epoxy/teflon finishes are a variation of the same basic formula. KG even sells a gunkote color called AK black, that doesn't match an AK47 finish, but is an exact match for the black Armory Kote....

Gunkote is a very durable finish, pretty equivalent to cerakote. Each one has its fans. The good news is, if you don't like the color on the MC Operator then it is pretty easy to have the lower stripped, blasted with 120 grit Al Oxide, and gunkoted in another color. Or bead blast it and have it blued or parkerized. At one point I thought it would be pretty cool to have one and have the flats polished and get it blued. Kinda like having the Marine Corp Operator in dress blues.

I have an MC operator and the finish is better than Cerakote as far as I can see. I have no scratches what so ever on it and my Cerakoted rifles show more wear on the Cerakote. I could be wrong but that's my impression. Hope that helps. Either way both are pretty impermeable.

Cerakote and armory kite are effectively the same concepts. One isn't "teflon" or "ceramic" based.

Cerakote and armory kote are resin compounds with imbedded pigment and dry lubricant. Depending on the color, that could be teflon or it could be molybdenum disulfide.

What dictates the effectiveness of one over the other is just as much the application of a specific product as it is the preparation of a substrate.

And calling something ceramic refers to the cured physical composition of microscopic particles in conjunction with its chemical makeup.

I'm going with this one because of all the fancy words

Ok my operator has seen a lot of rounds, 2 pistol classes and a lot of holster draws in leather and kydex. The wear on the finish is pretty minimal, the only spot that shows any real wear is the rail from taking my surefire on and off
