Anyone ride the safety?

Any of you guys shoot your 1911 with the thumb on top of the safety? I tried it out today, thinking it might make disengagement of the thumb safety more of a sure thing when I CC, but I couldn't get used to it. I found that occasionally the grip safety would not engage.
Personally I think I'm back to my old grip, and maintaining practice disengaging the thumb safety, then gripping against the panel.

I have always shot 1911s like that. I cannot remember a a time when it was uncomfortable.

I do. It keeps the muzzle flip to a minimum.

I always put my thumb on the thumb safety when I shoot a 1911. It was hard at first instructing my wife to do the same until one day she went to shoot the second round from the magazine and found the trigger would not work. She had placed her thumb under the thumb safety and the recoil caused her to engage the safety. That would suck in a self defense situation. Now she shoots my 1911 pistols with her thumb on the thumb safety.

I always ride the safety. Not uncomfortable at all. On my 2011 I don't think I could slide my thumb under it even if I wanted to as I have a pretty high grip.

If your thumb is not kept on top of the safety while firing, you might inadvertently engage the safety under recoil at an inopportune time.

Thanks for the feedback, I will have to give it another try next time I go shooting. Although I never have accidentally engaged the thumb safety personally, I can see how that would be a concern. My dad taught me how to grip the 1911, which was his 1911A1 Vietnam bring back, but with more modern "bumped" grip safety's and extended thumb safety's I can see how hammer bite/ disengagement of grip safety are less of a concern.

Yep.......you need to ride the safety. It is actually a great habit to have. Eventually, you will put your thumb in that spot no matter what semiauto you are shooting, safety or no.

This is true for me and that's why the slide never locks back when I shoot my Sig P239.
