    Handgun for mom

I know I know take her to the range... Let me explain my issue...

Shes mid 50's already dealing with some arthritis in hands, is able to rack a slide but im not sure how much longer... She currently has a ruger LCR in .38 that she loves and shoots damn well with... But of course she wants something with more capacity... I take her to the range and she shoots a few of my 9mm... Glocks HK Springfield XD SW Shield and she freaks out because of the recoil. I know her LCR has more recoil than any of my guns so its just a mental thing... Any ideas guys?

Also if anyone has any gun ideas to try im open to suggestions, shes out in AZ so roster isnt an issue... Ill be going out again next month and will take her shooting again...

There was a similar thread last month. You might want to check it out http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1306670
    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

If she's comfortable with a LCR, when not get her another for a New York reload?

Or perhaps take a look at one of the 8 shot N frames from S&W?

Maybe even a 9mm 1911? Mine seems to be incredibly easy to rack. And with the MecGars she'll be running 10+1 rounds of 9mm. And well, the full sized 1911s soak up recoil like nothing else.

I just bought my wife an LCRX, 3 inch barrel, lightweight 5 shot 38 revolver.
My wife can't rack any of my semi auto handguns. The one she did well with was my son's glock 19. She racked it pretty good and was dead on with her shots. We shopped around for a few months and ended up with the one close to the one your mom has.

S&W 686+ It has 2 more rounds than the LCR. The Ruger Redhawk 357 8 shot seems like a good candidate also.

Sig P320 full size seems to be a winner with my wife. She is recoil sensitive and she doesn't complain with standard 115 - 124 grain standard loads. It's the first time I've seen her rack the slide with no problem at all.

I'm with Dan on this one. I have a 5" 9mm Stainless Dan Wesson Valor. It's easy to work the slide, recoil is very light and the 1911 trigger is excellent. Since the roster isn't an issue, there should be a number of affordable, excellent 9mm 1911s to choose from.

Ran into similar issue with my mom, only she's eighty

might I suggest a 20 gauge Coach Gun? Only two shots, but the whole 'shotgun' thing may change the game for her.

After buying an LCP for my 70 year old aunt and finding out she couldn't rack it - I bought her a 640 with an Apex spring kit and 38 rounds.

How about a 9mm carbine? Since she's in AZ there are a TON of great options. They should be significantly easier to load and rack/charge than a pistol. Less recoil, and she can load up on 30 round mags to satisfy her capacity concerns.

                          How about a 9mm rifle?
I got my mother to get one. Super easy to shoot and handle, no huge muzzle blast.
She has an AR style one with featureless grip but if you want a traditional one there are some marlin camp 9's.
To cut down on the weight we did a 10" barrel with permanent extension.

If I may be so bold, there's one about every month.

The only handgun my 80+, severely arthritic Mom felt comfortable with was a compact revolver. Ended up with 640 with a Magna-Trigger & laser; first cylinderful at the range ~3" at 7 yards.

Autos can be disconcerting, regardless of the amount of recoil, because of the parts flying around right in front of the shooters face. If she's worried about capacity, DNA has a stirling idea, an additional gun identical to the one she's comfortable and proficient with. I've shot a lot of PPC and can reload a revolver quickly and efficiently under stress, but if I had a home invasion situation and had a revolver run dry, I'd drop it and head to the next bullet launcher.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

Every time somebody asked us what a question, I always recommend a 357 revolver. If the recoil is too much, load it with 38's.

I never recommend a semi auto for a casual or first time shooter. Those people need a gun that they can shoot a few times put away in the desk drawer and when they pull it out three years later they simply point and pull. No safeties, no slide, no jams, no magazines , no worry about maintnance, just Point, and pull.

I think a lot of times, we project our own wants and needs onto someone else.

Also, her grip strength is not going to get any better. She is having just a little bit of trouble now, it's only going to get worse. Under stress, she doesn't need the complexity of a semi auto. Tap and rack is not going to be in her playbook
