Pump Action AR Pistol

First post on calguns so hopefully its in the correct location. (I know how grumpy forum folk can be...)

I want to build a pump action ar pistol because of the AW and unsafe handgun BS we have to deal with in CA. Plus I wouldn't need a mag lock since its not semi auto.

My thoughts would be to start with an 80% lower, 7" barrel tac weld the gas hole, and use a pistol length piston system that was attached to a grip on both sides of the hand guard. Another option would be an ambidextrous side charging upper that is connected to grips on both sides of the hand guard (connection would need to clear the ejection port). I would also like to shorten the buffer, tube, and spring just enough so it will still cycle.

I'm mainly looking for input on making something like this work or seeing if any one else has done this and knows what won't work. Any legal steps I'm missing?(I know it needs to be built single shot) I had read that you need to build your upper so it hasn't been previously test fire as a semi auto, are there previous cases that prove this or are people just trying to stay on the safe side?

A "Pump Action" handgun still has to comply with the safe handgun law.

If you build it the way you've proposed, you'll still need to comply with the DOJ testing process.

To be compliant with the law as a single shot built, the weapon must meet the dimensional and design requirements of Penal Code section 32100(b). A "Pump Action" is not compliant with those requirements.

2. Minimum overall length of 10.5".
3. Be a single-shot. (can not have a magazine capacity or the ability to accept a detachable magazine/sled)
4. Operate via bolt-action or break-top.

If single shot is all you're going for, perhaps look at the Thompson Contender instead?

So my next question would it be legal to build a SSE2 bolt action pistol and convert it to pump action later? Also referring to #3 above is detachable magazine defined as one that can not be removed without breaking the action of the gun?

So it will have to be a single shot Break open pump action LOL these laws are crazy
