Range etiquette with magnums?

So i was just out at lunch shooting my 500 Magnum with some hotloads.

The guy next to me left kinda mad I guess. I was waiting until he was reloading for the most part to shoot, but the concussion and 3ft fireball was a bit much.

Before i started firing I let the guy to the left and right know I was shooting loud, and let the rangemaster know in case they wanted to put me off to the side.

I dont think there was much more I could have done?

p.s. Aside from that, this damn thing always gathers a crowd lol

You did everything correctly. In fact, I'd say you did more than enough and even went out of your way. If he didn't want to hear loud noises, he should have stayed home.

No you did more than what most would do if he doesn't want to hear loud noises then dont go to a gun range lol

I've been indoors with guys letting off those cannons. I personally have no problems with people shooting them. You showed a lot of respect for others. That guy was just sensitive.

You told him what you were going to be shooting before you started, and he didn't protest, so it's his own damn fault that his feelings got hurt. If he didn't want you shooting it next to him, he could have said no when you talked to him, but he didn't. Not your problem anymore.

I've found the 460 worse than the 500. Those two are the only calibers that require both solid earplugs and muffs. The guy was probably only wearing muffs.

You provided proper courtesy. I actually like to shoot next to muzzle cannons sometimes. It is my test to see if I can control my reflexes.

If I can focus on my shooting even though there is 6.0 on the Richter scale next to me, then it means I can control my anticipation on my little whimpy p226.


Reminds me when I was at Safeways, where they had an emergency water break. There was one corner of the store that was cordoned off, with a large jackhammer going off intermittently every few minutes. I had gotten back from the range, so loud noises wasn't really phasing me. I noticed all the customers and employees were flinching everytime the jackhammer went off, and I pretty much didn't care. Funny watching a store full of people collectively flinching. They probably thought I was hearing impaired.

42.5g of H110 behind a 350g bullet sure makes for a cool display indoors though.

And the 700g boolets were farkin loud

It's a two way street- if it was bothering him he can speak up.

You went out of your way to be courteous, frankly that is more than most people will do. I asked a local smith about a muzzle brake for featureless and shooting next lane over indoors- he replied "Suck it up, it's a gun range, things get loud."

I try to be courteous, offer to share some peel & stick targets, wait for them to back off the line etc. - but, at the end of the day, I am still going to shoot what I brought with me.
