    SAFETY REMINDER!!!!!!! Whoa.......

So I am in my neighbors garage today when we were both out doing some projects in the front of the house while it is spring and not snowing up here in Idaho. As I was yacking about Trump, politics, and more, we were chatting about .22LR ammo and he had asked me about a new gun that he picked up from his sister that he really didn't know anything about. As he pulled it out, he clicked the magazine but didn't pull it all the way out and it LOOKED empty. He fooled a bit with the bolt and after he put the magazine back in it, handed it to me and said "I think it should be empty" expecting me to click the trigger.

I grabbed the gun and immediately pulled the bolt back and as it clicked rearward, the shell EJECTED FROM THE GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I obviously wasn't expecting it to come out and looked up at my neighbor in kind of shock and disgust! He said, "Oh I guess there was ONE in there" and kind of laughed it off. I moved on and he obviously felt dumb about it, and we talked about other things.

I only bring it up here as a reminder to CHAMBER CHECK EVERY SINGLE TIME. EVERY SINGLE TIME. EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not unloaded until you've checked and made sure it's unloaded.

I worked a local gun store counter back in 2000 thru 2004 - Diamond Jim's / Ukiah, CA

We had a policy -- You bring a gun (rifle or handgun) in, WE ... NOT the gun owner or person bringing the gun in ... WE check it. WE take control of the box, or bag and WE CHECK IT ...! And we found this okay with most gun owners ... they understand.

BUT ... ever now and then you get a bubble-head and they say, as I take control of the box or bag when they try and open it and take the gun out, I absolutely take control of the box/bag and open, take firearm out, point in safe direction (keeping in mind other employees and customers) and check the chamber.

And while I'm doing this, before I check the chamber, idiot bubbleheads have to ... they just have to say "you don't have to check it, I wouldn't bring a loaded gun in here"

In four (4) years I worked there, and we DROS'ed approximately 250 to 350 guns a month, very busy little store. In the 4 years I was there I, myself, popped 3 live rounds from the chamber And every one of them, all three said "oh ... it's not loaded, or I wouldn't bring a loaded gun in here"

People ... TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY ARE LOADED. Someone hands you a firearm, and you see them check it and they hand it to you ... CHECK IT ...!!!

Whenever I hand someone a firearm, the mag is removed and the action is open. With a revolver, the cylinder is open.

I went to my Grandmother's house . She says I found somethings I want you to have . I go with her to the safe .Grandpa was a big coin collector she's starts handing me boxes . I've kinda got them stacked against my chest . I hear a very distinct click . Hmmmmm. Start opening boxes most contained coins one box contained a couple firearms in factory boxes . One a 4 barrel Derringer style 22 short pistol with 4 in the chamber one rimfire wth a serious probably should have gone off . The rounds were all green along with the brass body on the firearm .

My friend's dad passed away a few years ago. The father was long time FBI agent and had quite few guns and items my friend was going through. One of the items was a wallet gun of some sort. My friend was trying to open it and shot himself in the leg. Luckily it was a .22 LR or .25 ACP, so no major damage and a full recovery.

If I'm ever handed a gun, it is always loaded in my mind until I safely check/clear it myself and 100% confirm it is unloaded.

And even then it's loaded! It's a mindset, always loaded and treat it that way.

I had this talk with a friend yesterday. He's curious about guns and hasn't bought one yet.

ALWAYS treat it like it's loaded!

Sorry to hear OP, there is no excuse for your neighbor's negligence. Glad you were unharmed.

And then it should still be treated as if it is loaded!
