walther ppk or sig p232

hi guys, looking for a gun for the wife. which you recommend and why? both are similar in spec. thanks for the input in advance.

are these the guns you want her to have or are these acutal guns she's tried and wants? have her try different handguns to see what she's most comfortable with and go from there. my wife prefers the full sized sig p226 in 9mm and p220 in 45acp. but yeah, what he said...not the ppk (they're known to bite). besides, sigs are more reliable!

thanks guys. she hasn't shot anything yet. she liked the feel of the walther, but everything i have read agrees with your feedback. since we own a g17 i want a 9mm, but she doesnt like the look of the g26. she also feels the g17 is too heavy and she cant rack it. it is going to be for home defense so i want her to be able to use in case of an emergency. unfortunately, she didnt like any of the revolvers we fitted either. any other thoughts?

Maybe try some of the other subcompact 9's out there: S&W M&P, HK, Springfield XD, Walther P99, etc. Some have different backstraps to reduce the size of the grip. Having a smaller gun like a PPK, doesn't necessarily mean the gun will be easier to rack the slide. Try to find a range that will rent the guns to let her test shoot them rather than just holding them at a shop. Don't know where you are located so can't recommend a place to you.

because of the design on the 380's that you listed they have a rather sharp recoil, someone said a bite. I would a gree with that. A revolver would be best, but if she dosent like any look at the Kahrs. maybe try the beretta 380....

Why does "Looking for a gun for/girlfriend/wife" come up all the time? Why would you go with a .380ACP for HD? Why would you need a sub compact for HD? It sounds like your wife just wants a "cute" gun.

These small cute guns are neither small nor cute feeling once you pull the trigger. I have a Sig P229R in .357Sig which kicks quite a bit but my tiny 9mm Kahr PM9 kicks even more since it is so darn light.

Your wife would be better served with a full sized 9mm which has significantly more power and less kick that the little 380's you are talking about. Get an all metal gun like a Sig 229/226 for added weight to reduce kick.

I own the sig 232 and shot many PPK's. With sig 232, it's a well balanced firearm, no safety to fumble around with. There's a loaded chamber indicator above the extractor.

With PPK, it's about the same size. What I didn't like about the PPK is racking the slide. Seems your fingers pulls on the safety of the PPK with edges being sharp. The new smith wesson PPK's seems to have honed the sharp edges, but if I were to pick up a PPK it would be interarms model for nostalgia's sake. Some PPK's are finicky with ammo, my sig 232 will shoot anything.

Both are blowbacks, so they do snap back and have a beaver tail bite. If you have time try both.

thanks for all of the input. i know weight and kickback are a concern. i have a g17 that she cant rack so that is an issue. i actually thot of a g19 or g26 but she is concerned on the racking as well. i think i might just forcefeed a revolver.

I own both PPK's as well as 230's...

That being said I would recommend the Sig 230/232's... The ergonomics are superior on the Sig and it feels quite a bit lighter (at least the blue alloy frame ones). The PPK's are certainly a classic design, solidly built, and very flat for carry. I really like the lines of the PP's, the longer barrel versions are prettier to my eye... I should mention that the stainless version of the Sig is considerably heavier than the alloy framed blue ones.

I will agree that if she will not be carrying the pistol she would be better off with a larger, easier to shoot handgun.

More reliable, accurate as heck, and doesn't have a slide-mounted safety to futz with in an emergency.
