Is your Dad a Florida resident? If not you guys won't be getting any firearms from that state or any other state unless your Dad is a resident of that state.

I personally have taken several newbies to the range to fire guns of mine they might be considering to purchase..

and most of us know the local ranges, ffl dealers to go to and avoid, gun stores to find good inventory and prices, etc..

More than likely not going to be possible sorry. Intrafamilial transfers only work from Dad to son, mom to son, and maybe a few others, doesn't work from uncle/aunt to you or your bro or sis.

Yah I did not think so, he just brought it up. Must of been something you could do in the past.

                  18+ can't receive a handgun as a gift anymore?
Why wait until 21 to buy your own if your dad is willing to get you a handgun...

                    you always remember your first..

after shooting lots of uncle sam's and other family handguns, I finally went shopping for my first when I was in my thirties..

eye grinding a trp operator when I overheard a couple of fellas chatting about the upcoming .50bmg ban..

asked Robert [miss that old coot over at sig hill] for something cheaper to save for my .50

after they all shared some guffaws, I shrugged and settled on an xd9, which has turned out to be a fantastic gun for 13 years now..

then made it my life's mission to find one, and bought a barrett m82a1 a month later

a couple of years and other guns later, hankering for a 1911 of my own, ordered a custom pro, my first 1911

too bad I'm not that close to you or we'd be able to meet nearby for you to test drive a few different models..

but I'm sure we have a few members here closer to you that would enjoy taking a new guy out..

                    good luck

1911 was the first handgun I fell in love with. It was a Kimber warrior 2 ..... I realized I was a 1911 guy. Eventually bought a 1911 but it was not a Kimber. If I had to start all over again I would have gotten a G19 first and learned to shoot it well. Now I still have problems shooting Glocks and I have too many guns to try and make myself good with one. I can shoot them I just hate doing it. Anyways G19 or G17 if your larger handed and don't want to holster it as much. XD is a fine weapon too. Shoot them both back to back and decide.

Yes I hope so too, I'd love to test out and learn all the proper safety procedures on the handguns I'm interested in. I am not too experience with pistols, I have shot far more shotguns and rifles, so I need to learn how to properly operate them.

I have heard that this is to prevent suicides. It could just be BS, but an employee at my range said that when a single guy came in and tried to rent a gun. Does anyone know if this is true?

Yes this is to prevent suicides, Range guy told me "If you come single but have your own gun you can rent any"

When I turned 21 I bought a Springfield TRP Operator 1911 and have had just that for 6 years now. Heavy, accurate, straight shooter to 50m with the adjustable sights although just for fun.

Now I am going to try the other side of the fence and get a Glock 19 for lightweight and concealability. I didn't like the G17 but the G19 fits me perfectly and the triggers I've tested at stores seemed likeable.

You definitely should get out and rent and or test as many as you can, hammer fired, striker fired, single stack, double stack, polymer, metal, full size, compact.

Sigs are a very healthy medium between 1911s and Glocks. HKs feel and look real nice. Just have to find what you like and feels comfortable.
Believe half of what you see and nothing you hear.

OP I would scope Calguns for a used Sig P226. They are great shooters, that can double as a great HD gun. Good luck!!!
