Question on shooting alone under 21

Just wanted to double check on what the law was pertaining to anyone under 21 shooting a handgun alone.

I was going over to Davis st Range with my 92F along with ammo, legally gifted from my dad, and my HSC; however the guy at the counter refused to let me shoot. Said I was too young, can't legally shoot. I understand if those are range rules as it is his property, but are there laws against anyone under 21 legally owning a handgun and using it with no "supervision?"

I've done it at Insight using my father's sig, my HSC, and my ammo with no trouble.

The law is one thing. The range rules are another. If the range has a rule against you shooting alone, don't make a stink about it. Instead, show your maturity by respecting their rules. If you don't, it will prove that their rule is justified. Also, they mat have certain rules due to city ords and/or insurance.

As long as you are 18 or over and not a prohibited person.

Really? so the day i turn 18, my dad can give me one of his handguns, and have it registered to me, and DROS it, even though i'm not 21? and to think, i was going to wait until i was 21.

YOu can't have him DROS it to you as a PPT through a dealer, since the dealer is not permitted to transfer a handgun to anyone under 21.

However, your father can just give you the handgun. You'd need to have an HSC and then fill out an intrafamily transfer form, http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf , and mail it into CADOJ along iwth $19 and they'd now be legally registered in your name.

Yup, which is why I respect his rules and left. I just wanted to make sure there were no laws I was breaking since I have shot at other ranges with no problems.

Just rememebered...
Some indoor ranges require you to use their ammo and you need to be 21+ to buy handgun ammo. So, that could be a reason why they won't let persons under 21 to shoot handguns without supervision.

Good little boy (pat on the head). Really, I hate rules like this. I worked at an indoor range and I had to follow this same rule. It was only due to our insurance. I always apologized to those under 21 who did not have an "adult" with them. I've had to turn away more than a few guys who were home on leave and takeing their girls out to shoot. It sucked that we, the United States, have already given these exact same youngins SMGs, dropped them off in the sandbox and told them not to be mean to the local kids. Yet, when they get back home, they can't be trusted to buy handgun ammo or even shoot a .22lr at many ranges without "an adult" supervising them. I feel for you.

You did the right thing. I'm not saying you're one of what I'm about to mention. I've seen a couple of guys get turned away from a shooting range because of their ages, but what really rang bells were the way they were dressed and talking. They were just too hippidee-hippy-hoppee with the crooked baseball caps, dark loose clothes and the modern gangster lean walk. To tell you the truth I felt comfortable when they were turned away.

Another story was when I tried to bring my 7 year old kid to teach him how to shoot. The range rule was no one under 8, but the rangemaster let him in and told him to have fun, but listen to range commands.

I just want to commend you for your maturity respecting the rangemaster's decision.
