    1911 .45 and 9mm.

Being an older guy , I always thought of a 1911 as 45 . Owned many over the years . Shot them in matches and just for fun . Never carried one since my department does not allow 1911. Recently , more and more I keep noticing that people go totally nuts about getting a 1911 in 9mm. I like 9mm 1911 too and have several , but stI'll enjoy .45 a lot more. What is driving the 9mm 1911 popularity other then the cost of ammo ?

I think perhaps its the newer generation of shooters that are more inclined to 9mm over .45 (besides cost) simply because its smoother, particularly out of a steel framed 1911.

What this generation is using for Military and Law Enforcement Caliber probably has a lot to do with it, too.

Recoil is the biggest thing from my students. Most if not all of them love the 1911 ergo but don't like the recoil of full house 45acp loads. 9x19 gives them the best of both worlds plus advantage in capacity.

Yup, heavy gun, light round, 9mm in a 1911 is just a pleasure to shoot. Love those 9mm 1911s for the reasons already mentioned, low cost, light recoil, smooth shooter.

I have only ever owned 1911s in 45 until I traded for a loaded 9mm recently. Took it out for the first time this weekend. I was pretty impressed with it overall. Shot smooth, no hiccups and the recoil is almost nothing. I prefer the 45 but it is definitely a keeper and will be used a lot when bringing new shooters out.

Somewhat 9mm exclusivity here. Don't get me wrong, I have my share of .45 1911s that I'll never give up. Along with some .357 and 38 revolvers and rifles I will not let go. But with the current impending legislature, current prices, and other reasons I've slowly whittled down to 9mm in most of my collection, including a couple rifles in 9mm. Cheaper to have a boat load of one caliber that is relatively inexpensive.

A more simple answer, it's what I like and shoot best

9mm is cheaper and MecGar makes reliable 10 round flush fit mags for the 9mm. If carrying for duty, I'd much rather have 10 rounds of +p+ 9mm than 7/8 rounds of standard pressure or +p 45acp. The load out would be 51rounds vs 36/41rounds when carrying 4 mags plus the one in the gun.

Who doesn't like more rounds and a gun that shoots like a Lazer? Plus ammo that all my other 9mms eat. No need for an extra caliber, logistics ftw.

Ammo cost for practice is #1 for me. I have boxes and boxes of fired brass that just needs sizing and primer crimp swaged. Mainly for range use and training my kids how to shoot. The 9mm having a slim tapered case just feeds and extracts more reliably than any other round.

With the draconian gun laws restricting us to 10 rounds why even mess with the bigger grips of 2011s and double stacks. I do have 1911/2011 in 40s and 45s. If I have to use a 1911 for defensive purposes I'd be picking up a 45.

1911s are great guns in any caliber. Choose according to the use.
I have mostly .45s but some in 9mm too. I like them equally. Now, in Calif and because of scarcity, the 9mm gets more attention. Add to that the low cost of ammo and the soft shooting, you get a popular gun.
Keep in mind that every 1911 maker has from several to many 9mm models. That adds up to upmteen dozons. here in Calif, we can only buy 2 of them from the store.
