    1911

Hey guys I know there are about a million 1911 threads on here but I need to add one more. I want to buy one so bad and I cant help but look at the Auto Ord 1911. Its a nice looking pistol and for about 500 bucks I dont know if I can pass it up. I know some of you are going to tell me to save up and buy a kimber or some other 1000 and up pistol but when you have two little boys 500 is almost impossible so 1000 is impossible. I do want your opinion though because I want to make sure my 500, as little as that may seem, is well spent.
    Thanks

I would get a used Mil Spec Springfield Before the Auto Ordinance. They where not known for there quality, or even a RIA over the auto.
Do a little research on them here

+1 I don't know anything about the AO but I do know that SA has a great warranty and they're in your price range.

I'd say Springfield would be the best bet for a less than $500 1911, then the RIA. The Taurus 1911s may be worth looking into.

I own both Springfield and Rock Island 1911s. I would suggest you buy a used Springfield Mil Spec, but if you want a new gun, the RIA is hard to beat. Rock Island GI model is a great gun and can be bought for $400 or so.
In an emergency, always dial 1911.

The old Auto Ordnance really had a bad reputation. Since Kahr bought them out, and completely changed where and how they are made, I have read good reviews of them. They are not seen around enough to get accurate feedback from fellow shooters, all old-timers will still pooh-pooh them from their bad old days. I suggest try it out in the store, if it feels good enough for you, go for it. They will have some kind of warranty, I don't think you will get "taken" by Kahr. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of these, people bad-mouthed RIA at first, but they are really not bad either, I've shot one, it's not discernably different than my Essex/GI slide mutt.

The Auto Ordnance are about the worst in quality when it comes to cheap 1911s made in the USA. Back in the late 80s I've shot a couple of them and they were jamming with factory ball ammo. Wasn't just the crappy mags they came with, even Wilson mags wouldn't feed the rounds 100%. The guns needed some ramp work and polishing. The accuracy was mediocre. That just left a really bad taste in my mouth. I've been told their quality has gone up, but last I handled one it felt the same rattling 1911. Maybe the very latest one may have something, but I'm not about to buy one to find out.

Be patient and get a used Springfield Mil or GI Spec.

I believe the OP knows that and is not looking for a Great 1911 just the best option in his price range.

I vote Rock Island Armory. The people I know who have one speak highly of them.

Whenever someone talks about buying a gun on a tight budget, I'm gonna remind them that they will need ammo.
