    629 front sight

I'm talking to a fellow Calgunner that has a 629-1 that I might trade for, he says it needs a new front sight. Anyone know how difficult this is, would it need to be done by a Gunsmith or is it something I could do myself? If it would require a Gunsmith any idea how much it would cost for a standard sight?
Thanks in advance for your help.

On a -1 the front site blade and ramp are integral with the barrel and would be a big job to change out. If it just needs a new color insert that is easy and you can see how to do it on Youtube. You can buy the inserts at Brownells or other big store.

There were a few -1's that had a fancy gold dot front sight that would require a gunsmith as well. There were some Lew Horton -1's that might have the replaceable front blade but I believe those all had 3" barrels and are rare and expensive.

      Thanks Barbarosa,
I found out it is just the insert. I'll check out YouTube.

I have had front sights fall off of a 1911... it was not done right at the factory.... it happens...

Get a picture and post it up.... I guess my question is both on the fix and was any damage done to the gun besides the sight coming off
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
        (thanks to Jeff Cooper)
