I am new and would appreciate help.

I just moved to CA recently and purchased my 1st firearm.(M&P shield 9)

I've shot the M&P 9 full size and fell in love with how the recoil and grip fit my needs. I've only shot the Beretta M9 before this and hated it.

Here's my question, are there any companies that have similar recoil and design of the M&P series that anyone would say is equivalent or better?

+1 and it won't be the last time someone here tells you to buy one.

A lot will mention glock. What they don't mention is that they feel like bricks with a barrel so you might not like how the grip fits your hand. CZ's have quite the reputation of having one of the greatest ergos as well as light recoil due to the heavy steel frame. It's like the baretta, only the super model slim version that's not a pain to shoot. BUT you can't go wrong with a glock 19.

Kahr cw9 or Kahr pm9, I think they are both still on the California handgun roster

You must go to a range and handle a few OP< there is no way for someone else to tell you how you perceive recoil.

If you want to go off roster, the Springfield xds is popular.

^^^ best bet is to hit the range and rent a few!

Looked for a lightly used M&P 9 here.

                            They show up often enough.

Otherwise, go to a range and rent as many as you can.
Go to a range that lets you shoot their guns for one fixed price, not a place that charges for each gun shot.

I like my Glock 34 better than my M&P 9.
                            Try a 34, 17, 19.

Ive never heard of "uncomfortable grip" ever being a factor for anything but glocks. Whats the grip angle on your power drills?Get a grip on the gun, get instruction, and you will be fine. Its funny how many people who complain about grip angle have a crappy grip to begin with.
