    Blued Vs Stainless

Hello, folks. You may remember from such threads as

    No GP 100 love?

    and
    Danger S&W 586!

By the way I checked for hammer push and it failed that test so it's a "no go".

Anyway I wanted to know whats the main difference with a blued GP100 vs a Stainless. I've owned all stainless revolvers and know they are easier to spot dirt and rust but is the stainless stronger? I'm really looking at getting a blued GP 100 soon to recoup the one I sold (man needs a revolver in is life) and I respect the S&W but Im just a GP100 lover at heart.

    Thanks CG

I've actually had better luck keeping my blued revolvers rust free than my SS guns. Rugers are very nice, strong revolvers. I'm an S&W guy at heart but there is a Security Six sitting at the local pawn for $250 that I'm thinking I might need...

You would have to look up ANSI charts to see what each steel's yield point, specific strength, etc., is. Compare and then make your decision. The main difference in my mind between the two is that blued steel has the protective finish, where SS does not necessarily have a finish. SS's protective properties lie in the alloy percentages.

I think the blued GP w/ a 6" barrel an the wood inset grips is a thing of beauty - sturdy, functional, beauty. Shame they don't make a blued Redhawk.

Other than needing a wipe down with an oiled rag once in a while, really no difference. Aesthetically I like how a blued finish ages far more than stainless.

                Not sure why it matters.....

Ruger is a very very strong platform... the gun will digest 10,000+ rounds of full power loads.....

Are you worried about a gun blowing up from an over saami pressure load or the forcing cone wearing out or the barrel throat eroding

                What is the concern?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Oh nothing of the sort. Im just looking to getting that blued version but noticed the blued was less expensive. I feel the GP100 are beefy guns for the reason mentioned. Strong work guns that last.

I have the GP100 in blued 6 inch and I have no problem with dirt or rust, just do a good cleaning and you'll be set.

Depends on the store you go to. I bought my blued 6 inch GP100 new for $610 + tax/dros. The blued 4 inch GP100 was $625 + tax/dros and the stainless steels were starting at $650-ish.

My bad I meant to put "LESS" expensive.

I don't think strength is a issue. Most important is what do you like?
I have a few of each, and the thing I think mostly about is scratching the highly polished stainless one. It seems to scratch easier than the blued or matt ss ones.
It doesn't sound like there is a whole lot of price difference, so if you intend to keep it, get what you want.

That's the plan but I was trying to gain a little knowledge on the choice. That blued 4 inch looks mighty fine in my eyes.

Besides aesthetics, there seems to be less sharp areas in the blued over the stainless GP 100s.
