Ambi-Cut 1911 Grips?

Most 1911 ambi safeties have a "wing" that keeps the right side from wandering out. The wing slips under the top rear of the right side grip panel - about the area of the top grip screw. The ambi cut is a slight recess that allows the wing to move freely.
It works, but always seemed a bit "Rube Goldberg" to me. Some ambi safeties incorporate a hammer or sear pin slightly longer on the right side and the right latch has a groove it rides on. Kimber, Mueshke for example. Seems to cut down on the "right side wiggle factor" too.GOA Member & SAF Life Member -
Has nothing to do with ambi. I eliminated one description for you.

"to be honest the top cuts look different. Is that normal?"
The reason that top cuts look different has to do with the thickness of the grips. The standard thickness has a lot more girth so the top can wrap upward around the plunger tube detent assembly. The slimline ones do not have enough girth to wrap upward around the plunger tube assembly because the plunger tube actually sticks out further then the thickness of the grip, so instead it is just cut straight across to fit under the plunger tube.Comment
