Shield in 9mm or 40SW?

I'm getting a new Shield for CCW. I can get a 9mm for $370 or a 40SW for $340.

I don't have any other 9mm guns, so I'd have to buy new ammo.

I have an XD40 and hundreds of rounds of ammo in the safe.

9mm can hold one more round per mag.

What should I buy?

I have a shield in .40 and a glock 27 in .40, and it kicks less than the glock. So if you have ever shot a glock 27 and thought it was ok.. the shield in 40 should be fine. why not go for the bigger round if you can handle the recoil?

Shoot the 40 and 9mm Shield back to back and you can tell almost no difference because of the spring setup. Load up defense ammo and the 9mm actually recoils more. I bought the 40 after shooting both since the recoil was nearly identical and I already had a stash of 40 ammo.

In your case the 40 Shield is cheaper, you already have ammo for it, and you can stick with one caliber to purchase. Seems like an obvious choice. Get the Shield in 40. The only reason not to is for the extra bullet capacity which is nice but you're likely going to carry an extra mag anyways. Just my 2c.

Personal decision for you, but I went 9mm. Cheaper and more widely available ammo, one more round per mag. + you can get 9mm+P and 9mm+P+

Strong case for .40 though since you already have the ammo.

See if you can try them both out....

If you get the 40 the Talon rubber grips completely change the gun. It is very slippery without them and a dream to shoot with them. I regretted buying the 40 at first but with the Talons it is now a favorite. Don't forget the Calguns discount for the Talons. Save you $2.

Well, for what its worth, I have the shield in 40 and love it. I shoot it better for some reason than my other CCW arms, P239 and P238, 9mm and short 9MM respectively.

As noted already, you can convert the 40 to a 9mm by simply buying a 9mm barrel, as the 40 mag will hold 9mm just fine. You can get more info of this on youtube. This conversion only works going from a 40 to a 9mm, and does not work going from 9mm to 40.

I know there are many arguments going against the 40 pertaining to ballistics. However, most of them can be diminished by using 165 grain instead of many of the higher grain rounds.

Also as noted already, the 40 has quite a snap to it that is not as pronounced on the 9mm. Much of this snap can be better managed by using the extended magazine, as it allows for a better grasp with the addition of the pinkie finger. However, as a carry weapon, I find it more comfortable to use the shorter magazine and have simply come accustom to the added snap; with some range time, it becomes less an issue to the point of not being an issue at all for me (Individual results may very).

I just bought the Shield 40 yesterday, and look forward to firing it soon, to compare to my Beretta Cougar 8040, which weighs in at 32oz vs the 20oz Shield. I watched a ton of Youtube videos on both models, and most of the reviews were very positive for both calibers. For such a small conceal carry in 40, I could not resist, giving it a try.

I've only shot 40 cal for the past 30 years, so it was an easy decision for me, but I would guess the 9mm is much more practical for most. I've also seen a few conversions on Youtube.
