    New member saying hello

I recently joined the forums because I am interested in purchasing my first handgun and this seems like the best resource for advice and info. I'm originally from Florida, but I've lived in Los Angeles for 6 years and I recently bought my first home here. Home defense is what has sparked my interest in purchasing my first firearm.

A few months back when I was visiting family in FL I got to shoot and hold a number of different handguns. I REALLY like the Sig P320. I had no idea CA had so many restrictions on handguns till I started doing more research. I initially thought it was just AR style rifles the Gov. was after. As I understand it, the P320 can still be bought through a PPT from someone who purchased it before certain legislation went into effect. I have already posted that I am interested in buying this specific handgun in the WTB marketplace section, but I wanted to ask if going through all this trouble is worth it vs. just buying something that is on the roster? The way I see it, the state of California is going to slowly continue to remove guns from the already limited roster until there's nothing left. So perhaps it's worth the trouble to legally purchase an off roster gun through a PPT to keep these guns in state?

    Thanks.

Your only obstacle will be cost. Probably a grand for the Sig you want, or around half of that cost for a Glock 19 or similar. Welcome!

Welcome to California.. As you can see, the handgun roster is limited to what we're allowed to purchase compared to those free states. As far as purchasing off-roster handguns via PPT, that is up to you if the handgun is worth paying the mark-up price on it. There are some out there for sale and I would suggest checking the For Sale section to see if one pops up as well.
As far as buying off-roster and on-roster guns, that is totally up to you. Some people will pay the mark-up, some won't. You'll have a mix of responses as far as that goes. Ultimately, only you can decide if that gun is worth it whether it be off-roster or on-roster. As far as hassles go, it really isn't a hassle other than finding one and possibly driving far distances to get it. Round-trip especially since we have the 10-day waiting period. It only comes at a cost.

Do you have parents or children out of state that like you enough to give you one as a gift?
          That is another method.

          Must be a gift, though.

If that works, find an FFL near you that both understands the process and does not charge too much for the transfer.

          Good luck.

          ps: Welcome!

Thanks for the welcomes and the replies everyone!

Garv, yes my father who is retired AF living in FL had even asked me if he could give me a gun as a gift? I tried looking this process up, but it wasn't clear to me how it's done and what the restrictions are. If anyone has any info about this process I would really appreciate it!

If you start with a G19 or an XD9 (or similar) you will have the HD need covered and then you can start to shop around and save. In the meantime you have a solid setup and who knows, you may end up keeping it!

Intrafamily Transfers are exempt from the roster. Your father qualifies.

He can have a FL FFL send it to your local FFL.

Here is Librarian's post about it (skip down to interstate in your case).

Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!

The TDS on my 10gallon tanks 110ppm
The TDS on my 29 gallon tank is 150ppm (due to substrate)

I ran into this thread where they are discussing this issue.

At first people seem to comment that it's impossible but later, people say otherwise. Surely this is a common enough issue with a cut and dry answer. If I wanted to contact a specific government agency to ask this question of being gifted from my father an off roster handgun from Florida to Cali who might i contact?

Interesting. He wouldn't have to come to California for the exchanged, it could just be shipped?

Yep, you need to each find an FFL (he needs to find one willing to ship to CA...not everyone does. and you need to find a local FFL to fax their license to the Florida FFL).

No need to call a government agency to verify this law. It's legitimate and often used. As others have stated, you just need to find an FFL that performs Intrafamilial transfers. If you tell us where you're located I'm sure we can suggest which FFL to use.
