    S&W 586

I have a chance to get one of these for $500 from a range. Go or no go?
Should I just save and get a GP 100 instead?

If I do purchase what grips and holster should I get?

Does anyone own one? Would love to see pics of yours.

    Thanks!

The liberal see's the glass as half full and tries to take more.
The conservative see's glass as half empty and tries to keep it that way.
I'm with the people on the side just pouring water in the glass trying to get a drink!

Do you not know what a good deal is?

If you don't like revolvers then don't get it. Please let me know which range and I'll make the decision easy for you.

Is it a rental gun at the range? Do you know how to inspect a revolver for the following?:
        Timing
        Endshake
        Forcing cone condition and wear
        Top strap gas cutting

Me telling you a go or no go would be silly without me inspecting the gun.

              Good, checked it last night

Not a lot for a range gun.

              Forcing cone condition and wear
It has wear cause it was a range gun but not a deal breaker.

              Top strap gas cutting
Not so bad. As stated it a range gun so some wear I there but it was not to abused.

Some rust in the trigger guard. I will do another inspection on Saturday.

Calm down, chief. I was just asking cause I am unfamiliar with the model. The moment I saw it I wanted it. Just asking the group about the gun, jeez.

Are you kidding me? Save up for a GP100 instead? Usually it's the other way around. If you didn't go and buy it, you missed out big time.

Oh it's used? Even so, that's a good price. Good luck!

I guess there's no messing around with you. You're too serious. Sorry if you took my post the wrong way.

I was going to post if you don't buy it, then you wouldn't know a good deal if it bit you in the _ss. I think I'll keep my thoughts to myself now. Congrats on your soon to be new toy.

586 is a collectable gun. GP100 is not, so much.

GP100 is beefier, can shoot hotter rounds (I never found that to be a big deal - who wants to load 'custom loads just for Ruger' vs. '38/357 loads'), shoots great. 586 has that gorgeous blueing.

Neither will go down in price, but an older 586 will appreciate in price.

I have both a 586/686 and a Ruger Security Six (sort of a pre-GP100?). Both shoot remarkably similar, slight differences in SA vs DA, but very subtle. After MILD trigger work by a Gun Smith, both are great. (I am a big fan of having a smith do the mildest trigger job they can - almost like blueprinting a Small Block Chevy ).

So of course the solution is - BUY THE 586 AND A GP100.

I think the 586 is a fantastic gun. But I think $500 is a little high unless you know that it doesn't have 15,000 rounds through it.

$350? Jump on it. $500? I might be tempted to just throw more money at one that is known to have less use.

                              I wouldn't get a used range rental gun...just like I wouldn't buy a used rental car.
But then again, I bet the trigger is really smooth from the use.

                              I had a GP100. It was a good gun.
