    question about good ear protection

i need some eats, the headphone type. should i get it at a gun shop or big 5? is there a brand that is "the brand"?

i need it to be comfortable and work with shooting glasses and most importantly, to fold into a neat little package

I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

You can get them anywhere. Just choose an appropriate decible rating preferably over 25.

          I just use winter earmuffs.

          I kid, I kid...

Frankly, if you're talking about passive muffs, they're all pretty similar. There are "names" in the field, but they all do the same thing at that level.
Then another horse PONY came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a huge sword. My kinda guy.

sportsmans guide has electronic for $20. We bought a bunch for our 4H trap club, and it changed everything for the better. Much easier to teach.

believe it or not the foam ear plug types have higher NRR ratings than most ear muff type of hearing protection. Foam ear plugs have a min NRR rating of 33 ear muffs are in the 25 range (non-electronic). They're cheap, easy to store & carry and disposable.

Personally I slam in some foam plugs and put my ear muff type over those - can't hurt any.

Damage to the ear comes not only from the sound that goes "into the hole" of your ear but also the vibrations that the rest of your ear transfer to the bones of teh inner ear and tympanic membrane.
So the Best for ear PROTECTION is muffs over plugs.

That said, Pro Ears electric muffs (and all electric muffs) have ONE advantage over just foam plugs --

                YOU CAN HEAR.

When you are on the range with your children or friends, hearing "look out" or "don't point that thing over here" is a big deal. When my kids were very little I actually lost interest in going to the range for a few years, because I wasn't able to communicate with them. One christmas I got every family member (and all my friends) Pro-ears electronic muffs and Shooting became FUN again.

Muffs sometimes get in the way of shotguns and rifles (even "slim muffs") in teh case of shotguns ear plugs are kind of okay because the muzzle is further away than a handgun and don't have the blast or high velocity sonic boom of 1000 fps shells.

You can always stop off at home depot and pick up some of the low profile Peltor style muffs and a big box of foamies for cheap.

I use the Peltor 97010 Ultimate 10 Hearing Protector. Costs $22 on amazon.com and works great. I'll probably upgrade to the comtac later on.

Try pickles, they're great eats. Seriously, I think that Peltor electronic hearing protection is the best I've seen.

AO safety's SHOTGUNNER muffs are pretty good, I use those on the .50 cal BMG too.
Most of us reenactors buy AO Safety because they're made in the USA, and they've had many many military contracts over the years.

I use Howard Leight ear plugs (NRR 32) on the inside, with their earmuffs as added protection outside. Very quiet, and very comfortable, could wear them all day long.
