Negotiating Price?

Hello. First post and first time buying a gun.

Is it appropriate or OK to negotiate the price of a gun at a gun shop?

Or are you just better off buying online where it is cheaper and having it shipped to the store. (In the case of one of the guns I'm interested in it's $105 cheaper online)

You can try but most of the shop the prices are set plus tax and dros fee.

I have negotiated before. It depends on how bad they want the sale and what their margins are.

Also, just because it is $100 cheaper online, doesn't mean it is really $100 cheaper. You have to factor in shipping, FFL fee, CA sales Tax, DROS. Actually, you have to pay CA tax and DROS anyways, so that doesn't matter as much. The shipping and FFL fee might be $100 right there. The FFL closest to me charges $50 for transfers and the shipping from the other FFL might be $35-$50 depending on insurance.

I usually only order online if no FFL in the area carries the gun I want. Then I just eat the extra costs.

I always ask for a better price, I even done it at Best Buy. It never hurts to ask.

I believe Turners will price match but it's been a while since I heard about them doing it.

$105 cheaper probably won't amount to a massive difference. If you do decide to get it shipped to your FFL make sure to pick one that doesn't charge insane transfer fees.

Thank you. It's free shipping. So it would still be a bit cheaper even if they charged $50 on this end (plus tax would be a tad bit cheaper.)

They would be getting a double sale since both my husband and I are planning on buying a gun.

I'll let him do the negotiating. He's better at it. Ha ha!

BTW, the biggest discount I've ever received on a new gun from a retailer is $50. Got $1049 down to $999.

If you quote a big store like Turners, a smaller store may not be able to match it but if they are willing to work with you it will probably be a more pleasant experience. As a new firearm owner it can be helpful to establish a relationship with a good local shop.

If you have it sent to a CA FFL they will still charge you sales tax based on the invoice amount. It sucks but it's the way our state works.

If you're in SoCal I would recommend using 2AZone or Ace Pawn for the out of state transfer. They only charge $25 which should amount to a decent saving.

I'd pay at least a little extra to avoid Turner's.
It took 1.5 hours to do the HSC there last time.

If the other FFL tossed in a box of ammo or something, be happy and establish a long term relationship with a respected FFL.
Maybe they will call you first for the unicorn you always wanted.

Just looked them up. Not too far away. Would make a nice day trip on Saturday.

They get some pretty crappy reviews as far as dealing with the employees, etc
