Primer Strikes - help figuring out a problem

Update 2/16/16 --- Issue resolved, summary on post #34.

Today I took out 2 new brand guns to break in. A Glock26 Gen4 and a RIA 1911 Rock Ultra CS 9mm.

I have 2 boxes of new factory ammo (100rds, MagTech) and I bought 100rds of reloads at the Range. Total 200rds.

No problems at all with the RIA. I had a couple of problems with the Glock:

First problem - FTFeed due to pregnant casing from a Reload. Case did not fit into the Chamber. Problem is obviously ammo.

Second problem - I am not sure if it's the ammo. I got 3 Light/Off-Center Primer Strikes, all happened with the reloads.

    See pic:

All casings in the pic are from the Glock. As you can tell, the 3 casings below failed to ignite. The ones above shot as normal.

The RIA shot all rounds without issue (40 New, 60 reloads)

Glock shot all NEW rounds without issue (60rds).

Of the 40rds RELOADS, the Glock had 3 Off-Center/Light Strikes.

Based upon this info, could the issue be with my Glock or just the ammo?

With all due respect, I don't need the Lecture or commentary on "why you shouldn't use reloads" etc ... I would greatly appreciate focus on problem solving trying to figure out, based on this info, if the gun is the problem, if there is something I should check etc.

I am wondering why I did not have problems with the Reloads on the RIA, even if I shot more rounds with it, and then 3 times this issue with the Glock.

As seen in the pic above, the Glock appears to Initially come into contact and strike at off-center on all rounds, ignited or not.

Your insight is most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Seldom the GLOCKS Fault

1 Clean the Firing pin and channel (This Area Should Be Dry, Clean and Oil Free.)

2 Try equal amount of quality ammo and see

The bottom were NOT fired from the Glock! You must have mixed up your brass. The Glock fired brass as seen it the top row have a very distinct strike. I believe the bottom row are from the RIA.

Other will chime in as to possible issues.

      My thoughts....

I will second what BlackyHouston wrote.

Detail strip the slide and make sure it is clean and dry. No lube in the striker channel or on the striker assembly.

If you still Have this issue I would try a different striker assembly. I would also contact Glock.

Best of luck and keep us informed on the outcome.

After reading 5.56Geo's post I took another look and the bottom row of casings have the impact way off center compared to the top row.

As much as you don't want to hear it the Glock may not be at fault. Test fire it with factory ammo and if it works those reloads suck.

            Thanks Guys.

All casings in the pic are from the Glock for sure.

As for the ones that ignited, the pin seems to initially strike at the same spot, off center, and then slide into the center that causes normal ignition.

As for the ones that didn't ignite, the pin initially landed at the same spot as the others, but instead veered off toward the edge. Because it is very diagonal, it does not make a deep impact.

That's just my observation. I don't know if that's the gun or the primer.

Impossible, firing pins are like thumb prints none exactly the same! Your picture is showing clearly two different types of strikes. If you insist they are all Glocks casings and are unable to see the difference than you perhaps have greater issues.

              Anyways good luck....!

                THanks, I will do that.

As previously stated: "All casings in the pic are from the Glock, for sure."

I'm not going to explain further why I know FOR SURE, as I do not enjoy having to embarrass people.

Understood, you were there I wasn't. My apologies. Good luck, I know gun issues are the pits. I have had a few in my days.

I would measure the casings with a pair of calipers , the light strikes might be short . or the primer pockets are to deep .

Were you rapid firing when it happened?
It looks like the rounds were not fully seated when fired.
Also, did you rerack the dudes and try firing them?
If not, see if they seat correctly on the chamber.

For the striker to hit that far off, something had to be screwy with how the case was sitting against the breechface. I'd guess the case didn't quite go into battery, leaving the case sitting a tad low against the slide. That would cause the off-center strike, as well as the light strike (well, on a hammer fired pistol it would; don't know about striker fired.)

BTW, the top casing marks are normal. The Glock pin lingers for a bit during extraction, causing that odd "smear" to the strike.

I would look into cleaning the firing pin channel first. I'm thinking there is machining oil, grease, or small bits of manufacture debris in there, causing the pin to not retract fully, and essentially slam firing...without ignition.

An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

Thank you so much for the helpful insights.

I immediately put blame on the Reloads. I shot the Glock first before the RIA, so I was expecting to have similar results, but the the RIA shot 60rds of the reloads without hitch. Its at that point I began to doubt, and wonder if its a problem with the Glock.

The 3 duds happened in 3 successive rounds of shooting (each round = 5 shots, 1 second or less in between. This is my usual practice routine). The reloads came in a neatly organized plastic case, not bulk. Maybe it was the hand of an apprentice that didnt install the primer correctly.

I'm going to fully clean out the Glock, and go back to the range to do the same thing. Will report back.

                            Thank you guys.
