      They started appearing around mid 70's when IPSC was founded by Jeff Cooper and people started competing in the game. And since at the time Colt was the main maker of 1911s, it is safe to speculate that most were done on upgraded and souped up Colts.

      I also think that, that was also the time the full length guide rods, wide magazine funnel, etc. came about.
