Just bought an XD45

Really though, Shoot it, Shoot it some more. Check the Springfield website Custom shop and see if any of the "upgrades" would suit you. Shoot it some more, maybe buy a few more mags for it, shoot it....you get the idea.

I would say go and shoot the thing a lot first, so you can figure out what you do and don't like before having it worked on.

That being said, I have sent two XD45's (Tactical and Compact) to Jeremy at Springfield Custom. He does nice work and is a great guy to discuss with. I've had exactly 3 things done to each of them:

1) Competition Trigger Job (set at 4.5lbs). This is the most expensive of their packages, but I wanted both the short take-up as well as the short overtravel and reset. As the triggers are now, the only movement there is before they are ready to break is the safety lever in the middle of the blade. There is no movement of the trigger blade itself, just loading as you start to squeeze. Total trigger movement is now pretty short with not to much of it involved other than breaking the sear. It's not quite a tuned 1911 trigger, but it's not too far off.

2) Changed the sights to Heinie Slant Pro Straight Eights. These are my favorite sights. Fast acquisition either day or night.

3) Refit the factory barrel. In talking to the factory guys, it seems the barrels are good, just mass production fit. It seems most of the smiths there just refit their barrels rather than buy new ones, so I opted to do the same. There is now no movement in the barrel when the pistol is in battery. On a factory pistol, if you take your thumb and push down on the chamber of the barrel, you will feel some movement. Mine no longer does that. The pistol was more accurate than me to start with, but I like to have every last bit of mechanical accuracy you can get so no one else to blame for missed shots.

Go out and have fun with it first. If in 500 or 1000 rounds you still want to change it....go for it!

Most of all, just enjoy it!

I want to shoot this a lot more before I do any customizing. Like you said it is more accurate than I am, the bench rest proved this last time out. trigger is the only thing I am considering in the future after I have this pistol figured out. The night sights that come on it are great for what I do although the Heinies you mentioned are awesome.
