    Meet the Smiths

I just freed these two beautiful j-frame Smiths from gun jail. They served their time and alas they are home to stay.

The beauty at the top is a Model 36 - no dash and is a real looker. Very little wear on any part of the gun. Took her to the range today and was really impressed.

The other is a Model 37 Chief's Special. Cosmetically this revolver has seen better days. From the looks of it someone carried this baby around for years and intend to do the same. Of course this is an air weight model and had a bit more felt recoil but was completely manageable.

These are the very first j-frame revolvers I have owned and I can already see why they have the reputation they do.

My biggest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Very nice. Unless someone's owned a J frame they might not understand how nice one fits almost anywhere.

People complain they're uncomfortable to shoot but I've never been bothered by it. Accuracy isn't "race gun percision" but that's not its intended purpose.

I don't know if you know this but the flat latch cylinder release on your lower revolver dates it to before 1966. (or it may have been replaced at a later date on to a newer model.)

Apparently there were three types of flat latch Smiths made, each for only a few years, so you can even narrow it down further.

Here's a thread with a little bit more information on that subject that also touches on the pre model 36 "baby chief" Smith & Wesson.

Have this model 36 I believe from early 70's. When did they change the release to the more modern one. Lady posted one she said was from 68-69 that had more conventional cylinder release. I think the grips are still missing at my friends house. There were laying around so put them on. Gun is...

I thought the OP was talking about my all time favorite band.

well done on both finds. i have several examples of the OldSchool Model 36, lots of old J-frames and there's always room for more.

I did too--thought the topic was a review of 80s music!
A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it.
