    Bring a PPQ Into CA?

I have lived in California for a very short time, and am still getting my bearings navigating the nonsensical rules we've got. I shot a PPQ this Christmas and would love to bring one back to CA. A family member has one in Utah. Would it be possible for me to buy it from them and fly back to CA with it (I would either disassemble the mags or not bring them at all)?

If this is a stupid question, please excuse my ignorance...

Simple answer is no. Assuming you've already made residency in CA. You're only limited to 2 options which is the gifting it through intrafamilial transfer or obtain one through a PPT. Also you cannot bring it into the state. It must be shipped from an FFL to an FFL of your choice if I recall. (If I'm wrong, someone can correct me on this)

However.. in order to qualify for this option (intrafamilial transfer and gifting), that family member must be directly from your blood line: Parents, Grandparents or your own children. Siblings, Aunts, Uncles etc... do not fall under this.

PPT (Private party transfers) must occur between two CA residents (one the buyer, and the seller who legally owns the firearm). Handgun roster is exempt from PPT's. This is the second way of obtaining a PPQ but at the California mark-up price. They range from $1100-1400 on the sales forum if you find one.

Your question isn't stupid even though it's been asked in a number of ways. The stupidity goes to the CA legislators and their draconian gun laws.

Thanks for the quick response. I figured 'no' was the answer, but I was not aware of the intrafamilial transfer. I suppose it may be possible for my father to gift me a PPQ... I found the form online. Do I have to submit this form and have the approval of the CA DoJ BEFORE the gun is sent from FFL to FFL? The form is a bit fuzzy on that.

Maybe this is too much trouble for a handgun... But it is definitely my favorite striker-fired pistol.

The form is used when everyone involved is a CA resident.

Since your father is a resident of another State, Federal laws requires the firearm to be transferred to you through a CA FFL dealer.

First thing you need to do is find a CA FFL dealer that knows about and is willing to do an out-of-state intra-familial gift of an off-Roster handgun.
Not many CA FFL dealers know how to process this or are willing to do it.

After you find a CA FFL dealer, your father then delivers the firearm to that CA FFL dealer.
Your father will need to include a gift letter and a copy of his State DL/ID.

Once the firearm arrives, that CA FFL dealer will then transfer (4473/DROS/10 day wait/1 in 30 day wait) it to you.

Understood. Thanks for the help. I'll see if I can find one, but it does sound a bit dubious.

Great gun. Price is double here for a PPT one than it is in free states. Ridiculous. Will be buying one when I get out of here.

It's my favorite 9mm as well, maybe I will get to CCW it in LA County when the devil gets a chance to ski in his front yard...
