Smith and Wesson Question

I am looking to get a Smith (specifically model 629 CLASSIC SKU 163638) but the CA roster only shows 163638A. What is the difference? The DOJ website explains the 'A' is an engraving on the pistol itself, but I can't even seem to find the 163638A (or any Smith +A) anywhere.

This applies to most California compliant Smiths. They have an A at the end of the SKU. But when researching to buy one, I cannot find any that comply. Everywhere I look/ask, no one seems to know. Info on this seems super limited.

The extra "A" was introduced relatively recently. I believe the intent was to prevent minor production modifications that would upgrade the model, but would also make it "different" from the one tested. The guns are otherwise the same and I am not aware of any models where "A" is different from the base model.

I haven't seen many places that would list the extra "A" or stock such model separately from the main model. If I wanted to get a revolver, I would either go to my LGS and ask him to order one, or I would call the online vendor and ask them to do the same thing.

There is one listed at Riflegear, although they don't list the A in the SKU, they do say it is CA compliant.

If you find one at a shop, it should have the A stamp on it. If you have an FFL order it for you, they should know about ordering a CA. complaint one.
If you see one out of state, you will needed to confirm that it is a CA. compliant one.
