S&W mod. 66 questions

I recently Aquired a S&W model 66 I know nothing about it other than it was bought by an ex cop in the early seventies. I have the original box and paperwork and original pistol grip. It has a combat grip on it now. The barrel looks like it has only been shot a few time. what is something like this worth.

Not knowing the model 66 dash number nor barrel length, I'd say anywhere from $350-$500 tops, at least in a free state. A used model 66 should be a very good shooter. If I ran across one, odds are it would be a keeper.

I keep up on the S&W market in California on a regular basis. If you want to open up the cylinder and tell me what "dash" number it is, and give me the first few letters/numbers of the serial number I can give you a better idea of what you have. Also as noted above a barrel lenght helps in addition to a general overall condition rating to assess value. Model 66 is a sweetheart...just don't run too many 125 gr. .357 Mags down it.It will take it's toll on it over time. The older "K" frames like the heavier grain rounds, ie 158gr or heavier or better yet just some good 'ol .38 special. HTH c good

If my memory is correct I think the 66 was Smiths first stainless revolver and the first stainless revolver produced by any manufacturer in large quantities. Hope one of the Smith collectors can confirm that for my own coriosity.

I love my 66. I bought it when Turners had a sale on all display guns, and sent it to Bain and Davis to have it checked out, thay also smoothed out the trigger, and chamfered the chambers. From there it went to Robar to have the stainless blackened. I used it for IDPA for 2 years, them my dad kinda liberated it from me, and keeps it at his side at home and the shop now.

No, you are thinking of the Chief's Special Model 60. If my memory serves, that was back in 1965. I remember they would sell for double the list for quite a while...

I have the sister gun to it the model 65. It is one of those guns I'll always have. Accurate as all get out and just fun to shoot.

It is a stub nose I with a 2.5 inch barrel, measured muzzle to chamber under the cylinder is mod.66 C-15 602xx AND A SIDEWAYS "S" under the ser. #.

Turner's in West Covina has a used 66 for sale for $499. It's a 6 inch model with the box and looks new. I didn't look to see if it was a 66-something.
