    New to guns

I grew up in an extremely anti-gun family. I have never held, much less fired, any firearm. However, I have always thought shooting seemed like a lot of fun, especially since finding hickok45 on youtube. I have done tons of internet research over the past couple years and I feel like it's time to go and try it out for myself.

Home defense is a plus to me so I think handguns are the place to start (ease of storage is also a big factor). However, I can't see myself investing the time and money to practice unless I enjoy it and I absolutely will not buy a firearm unless I know I'll practice regularly.

I was wondering if there is anyone around Santa Barbara (<2 hr drive) who would be willing to bring a few handguns, maybe different calibers, to a range and show me the ropes. This way I can see if (and what) I enjoy shooting before dropping serious money on a gun and lessons. I would pay for range time and ammunition.

    Thanks!

You can go to an indoor range that rents out pistols but read the policy as some will only rent if you brought your own pistol or if you have a friend with you
I'm not from your area but LAX Firing Range has rentals

Look around for a beginner-level handgun safety class at a local range. They usually provide a variety of weapons to try out, once you've learned the basic safety protocols. The price generally includes classroom training, range time, a variety of guns, and ammunition. It's a good way to get your feet wet, and you will receive valuable and essential safety information in the process.

Two years is a long time to window shop. Why not just go to a local range a take a beginner class? They'll provide all the eq and get you started on the right foot.

I'll chime in on taking a class. Basic knowledge of operation and how to handle malfunctions (misfires/hangfires/squibs) is critical.

Thanks everyone for the awesome responses! I found a couple local people willing to take me shooting (handguns and long guns).

I definitely hear the beginner class suggestions and will be signing up for one shortly.

As for why I've been "window shopping" for so long -- I've moved between three states in the last few years and lived in University housing last year. I now have CA residency and will be staying here for many years and no longer live on school property

If you can drive down to oaktree where I'm a member, I will "rent" any gun you would like to try. For just the cost of the range and ammo. I'll throw in some quick pointers to get you going safely. P.m me if you're interested.

I make this offer to any NEW shooter.

                            Thanks for checking back.

When you get something, we have a thread where you can post a pic and brag about it.

If you are uncertain between a couple choices, you can post a question here and let the responses fly.

Also be sure to ask if 9mm or .45 is better. (JK)

Island View Enterprises in Ventura offers training and pistol rentals. The NRA offers an online basic pistol training class. https://basicpistol.nra.org It's $60. Then I THINK you are supposed to sign up with a human being to complete the firing portion of the course. Frankly, I'm not a fan of this program because I would rather observe and get to know you before I stick a gun in your hand. The NRA insists that some people are less intimidated by this computerized method.

IMO, as a prospective shooter, the most important thing for you to do right now is to familiarize yourself with the safety rules. In that regard, I'd recommend that you study the Firearms Safety Certificate (FSC) study guide. https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/a...orms/hscsg.pdf

That will give you some idea of what will be expected from you at the shooting range. If you want to take the test and get your FSC, shoot me a PM and we'll schedule a time. You'll need the FSC card to buy any gun in CA. I won't charge you, but the state will.

Based upon how you feel after the test, we can work on the next step. Again, shoot me a PM and we can discuss it.

Edit: Beat me to it. But let me know if you want to get the FSC.
