How to ship a handgun out of state?

My father in law left a few items in town when he was on a visit and I need to ship them to him. He lives out of state and among those items is one of his handguns that he was letting me try out. How do I go about shipping this to him? I did a search and it appears there are a lot of different answers.

    1. Do I go to a FFL and have them ship it directly to him?
    2. Do I go to a FFL and have them ship it to his local FFL?
    3. Do I ship it directly to him?
    4. Do I ship it directly to his FFL?

If I have to ship from my FFL, do I have to box it, or do they do that? What is the normal cost to ship (ground)?

If I have to ship it to his FFL, do I have to inform them first that it will be coming and to expect it? Do they charge him anything to pick up the firearm? (If I have to ship it to his FFL, this is the dealer that he purchased the gun from so I would hope they wouldn't charge him just to hand over a gun that they already sold him?)?

    Thanks

You may ship direct to his FFL, who will deliver it to him.

You may take it to an FFL to ship to his FFL, who will deliver it to him.

You may not ship it directly to him.

It is a courtesy to let the receiving FFL know ahead of time that he is receiving a firearm, but not required. I recommend it.

If you ship it yourself, it must go via UPS or Fed Ex (DHL doesn't allow firearm shipments) and their policy requires that you take it to a HUB (not the UPS stores or FexEx stores), ship it overnight, and declare the contents.

If you take it an FFL to ship, they can charge you for it, but they can ship via USPS Priority mail, which is much cheaper. You will need the receiving FFL to send a copy of their license to the shipping FFL if you go this route.

      Great thanks!!!

Do I need to box it, or does the FFL need to do that?

btw, DHL is out of business.

It depends on the FFL. Some do, some don't. Call them and ask. usually a handgun factory box fits nicely in a Priority Mail flat rate box.

Aww, that's sad to hear about such an upstanding anti-gun company <sarcasm>
