    top break S&W 38

I was given a old pistol that says 38 S&W CTGE.. it is in poor condition. the action works but the cylinder turns at all times. The grips are missing. I am in the process of giving it a good cleaning. I tried to get the age on line without luck. The ser # is only five digits 518** . a approximate date would be helpful. i doubt it is worth finding parts to make it functional again.Calguners have been good to me so if somebody needs parts to fix theirs PM me

On some of these designs the cylinder is designed to spin until cocked or pressure is exerted on the trigger then it will begin to lock up.

Also note that it is probably chambered for the .38 S&W (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.38_S%26W) NOT the .38 S&W Special. Different cartridges and different bullet diameters.

Look on top of the barrel for a maker and/or patent dates.

Before hand ejectors S&W made top breaks, like in 3:10 to Yuma, so thats probably what you have. 38 S&W is different than .38 Special CTG just stands for cartridge. Being a 38 S&W, also known as the 38/200 could you tell us if its a double or single action

The earlier top breaks were for black powder, and if shot with smokeless they tended to stretch and loosen up rather profoundly.

Here you go. Best place for info on Smith and Wesson.

Identifying an old top break Smith & Wesson DA Revolver in .38 S&W I am in need of some help identifying an old top break double action S&W revolver that I recently aquired. It is chambered for the .38 S&W Round, and has a 3 3/16" barrel. The only serial number I can find is on the bottom...

I have a feeling it is not a Smith and Wesson. We really needs pics to ID it.
