My brother-in-law is LEFT handed and wants to get a pistol. He does not like my Glocks as the mag release sticks out to far. S&W Shields he had a problem with the safety. What's a good pistol (40 or 9MM) for a LEFTY? THANKS

M&P9 and VP9 both have good ambi features . The VP9 honestly would be a good betWTB:

2)S&W 686 6in barrel ...686 No dash through 686-4
3) Saltworks M5 upper/lower set

Or any firearm you can have an ambi safety on. I use my pointer finger to release the magazine. Its takes my hand off the trigger and sight picture, and some say that's bad. But, I re-align and shoot on.
As a lefty I favor the H&K in variant 2, glocks and 1911's with ambi.sigpicComment

What other criteria does he have such as striker or hammer fired, polymer or metal frame, compact, subcompact or full-size? Most lefties can use Glock with extended slide lock lever and reach all controls with trigger finger or knuckle.
I shoot lefty and I find the Sig P226 is surprisingly lefty-friendly. The slide lock can be activated with pinky finger of right hand as I pull back the slide (hand over top). Mag release and decocker use trigger finger of left hand.
For range shooting, I can use knuckle of trigger finger to engage slide lock on most pistols, but I'd prefer an ambi slide lock to be totally lefty-friendly in case of clearing type 3 malfunctions. Button mag release is no problem using trigger finger. Off-roster full ambi pistols are PPQ M1 and VP9. Full-size M&P is ok, too. 1911 with ambi safety also works great left-handed.Comment

I shoot lefty and am right eye dominant. I compensate by rotating my to head on the left axis to line up the sights with my right eye. Yesterday, I was hitting steel plates at 50 yards.Last edited by MJWEB; 11-21-2016, 5:28 PM.Comment

as a lefty, my go-to guns are usually glocks. I don't have an issue with the mag release sticking out too far for either my Gen3 or Gen4 glocks. it sits just over my middle finger without issue.
I use either my left middle or trigger finger to drop the mag. slide release is usually done via slingshot instead of trying to use the slide release.
that pretty much is the way it is for anything that I shoot. Glock, Beretta, Sig, 1911, etc.
the only time I have an issue is if has a left-side only safety. those often get upgraded to ambi safety. the SIG decocker works just fine with the trigger finger to drop the hammer.Jack
Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Shooting left-handed has never handicapped me on any pistol, provided that if there's a thumb safety, it be ambidextrous.
I use the middle finger to drop mags and the trigger finger to release the slide. On a 1911, it allows me to drop the mag with less repositioning of my hand, and have my finger ready to drop the slide as I slam the mag in. Works well.
That said, Glocks are not southpaw friendly with regards to slide stops. The little thing they use (even the extended version) is useless. So I grab the slide and rack it if I go to slide lock on a Glock.
Glocks come with a super low profile mag catch (except 34 & 35), though I use the longer version exclusively (I shoot USPSA, so that's my perspective) with zero issues.
Figure out what works and use it. Or figure out what he likes and adapt. But looking for something that allows you to be a southpaw will handicap him if he ever needs to use a non-southpaw gun.Comment

I've defaulted to locking slides right handed. I can do lefty on some models like the XD but the proximity of slide to safety on CZ models makes CZ slides easier to manipulate righty. So now I lock all slides back righty.Shooting left-handed has never handicapped me on any pistol, provided that if there's a thumb safety, it be ambidextrous.

I do agree, in that I never mod a gun. And dropping a mag is quicker for lefties..Shooting left-handed has never handicapped me on any pistol, provided that if there's a thumb safety, it be ambidextrous.

But Sigs for some reason, have always been a problem for me. Especially trying to lock the slide back. And I really wanted a Sig years ago...Comment
