Last Monday I got my new Colt Combat Commander out of DROS jail. I did not intend to buy another 1911, but I saw it at the local gun shop a couple of weeks ago when I was picking up a S&W 4586 that I had purchased on consignment earlier. Since I believe that this "last of the Colt 1911 pistols left on the DOJ Roster" is going off next year, and the fact that he had only this one and said it looks like he will not be getting another, it got my attention. The lovely Colt was sitting there between two Kimber pistols. It really stood out among Kimbers, but then again I've always had a soft spot for the Commander style 1911. Ever since I started shooting pistols 40 plus years ago, I've always had a 1911 or two on hand. Before this latest addition, the only 1911 left in my gun safe has been a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 that I bought new 24 years ago. Anyway, I guess because I was already picking up a pistol, the dealer knocked some off of the list price, so I bought it.
Since I use Wilson magazines with lo-profile steel base plates, I put a light coat of oil on the two lovely new Colt magazines that came the Commander and put them away with the original Springfield Armory magazine I got 24 years ago with 1911-A1. This morning I was off to the range. The Commander shot wonderfully! I was using American Eagle 230 gr. FMJ ammo. The function was perfect, primer strike excellent, and it ejected the spent cases sharply right where I would expect them to be thrown. I am well pleased with the pistol based on this first outing!
